Position Summary

The College of Nursing at Michigan State University seeks applications for a full-time Research Assistant I. This position will coordinate and manage daily operations, activities, and all phases of the research study including recruitment, data collection, intervention, and dissemination. The Research Assistant will assist in hiring, training, and supervising study personnel; leading recruiting of participants and data collection; purchasing supplies and equipment; monitoring data and budget; facilitating contractual agreements; arranging travel, scheduling and planning study events and team meetings; maintaining institutional review board compliance; and communicating effectively with all study staff and partners. The position will work closely with the PI, co-investigators, other study staff, and key collaborators to meet study objectives. The Research Assistant will be responsible for completing IRB, HIPAA, and Good Clinical Practice training required by MSU, NIH and study sites, and complete MSU Travel Authorization Form. This position will physically work on the campus of MSU in East Lansing, MI with the possibility of a hybrid work schedule. 

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities 
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for all lab members and project contacts
  • Communicate with study team to determine and clarify the goals and requirements of the project
  • Arrange meetings for all projects, take minutes, and send reminders
  • Recruit and retain participants
  • Maintain direct communication with study participants
  • Process and reconcile PCard transactions for research participation incentive payments
  • Collect, evaluate, and synthesize data for grant-funded research projects
  • Monitor project requirements and consult with the principal investigator regarding any issues or concerns
  • Recruits and hires grant personnel including but not limited to writing job descriptions, hiring personnel, onboarding, training, offboarding, and professional development
  • Report on participant recruitment efforts and identify areas for improvement
  • Ensure data integrity through careful preservation and verification
  • Identify patterns and trends in data to inform research decisions
  • Support data management tasks, including sorting, statistical modeling, survey administration, error correction, and basic statistical analyses
  • Support compliance with MSU and DEI requirements during participant recruitment
  • Assist the principal investigator and study team with continuing quality assurance and control to meet institutional and regulatory standards
  • Ensures adherence to IRB policies and relevant regulatory requirements for all grant personnel

Minimum Requirements

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing four-year college degree related to healthcare, business, or project management; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in standard laboratory procedures and safety requirements and performing analytical and research techniques in an area related to research being performed; previous project management experience of programs or large complex projects; strong project management skills that are grant funded and the ability to work independently are imperative; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Desired Qualifications

A Bachelor's degree in a health science-related field such as behavioral or health research; a minimum of three years of relevant research experience; excellent judgment, initiative, and attention to detail; ability to perform effectively and make decisions independently or with minimal supervision; exceptional interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills; strong organizational and problem-solving abilities; experience with statistical analysis software; proficiency in Microsoft Office programs; proficiency in MSU Enterprise Business Systems (EBS) and Kuali Financial Software (KFS); and familiarity with research platforms such as REDCap, SPSS, and Qualtrics.

Excellent communication skills including written, verbal and digital experience with word processing, database, spreadsheet, presentation, calendaring software, desktop publishing and/or project management software; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
