RHS Safety & Security Service Coordinator
Position Summary
Characteristic Duties – Responsibilities
•Conducts access audits, establishes and maintains permissions, and coordinates corrections.
•Supports emergency drills, after-action notes, and continuity planning.
•Assists with safety walkthroughs, documenting deficiencies and corrective actions.
•Provides logistical support for training and maintains records.
•Investigates nationwide best practices in safety and security procedures and proposes changes to procedures and rules as needed.
•Reviews planned indoor and outdoor event requests to ensure compliance with applicable fire code requirements, life-safety standards, and emergency planning imperatives; coordinates with MSU Risk Management, EHS, DPPS, and unit leadership to ensure safe event execution.
•Conducts training sessions for RHS in topic areas such as confidentiality, emergency management, event/program planning, and fire safety/alarm/drills.
•Administers electronic key control systems and oversees key-issuance permissions for the Division of Residential and Hospitality Services (RHS), ensuring accurate documentation, secure handling, and compliance with established access-control policies and operational security standards.
•Collaborates with University departments such as Environmental Health and Safety on room and apartment inspections, common-area building inspections, and state fire marshal inspections, and works closely with MSU DPPS/IPF on building access governance, including key control reviews and electronic access audit processes.
•Provides required documentation of all state-mandated fire drills, including maintaining drill logs, collecting compliance records from units, and submitting reports to appropriate University and regulatory authorities.
•Coordinates the annual review and update of the Clery Act Fire Safety Report for RHS facilities, ensuring accuracy of fire statistics, equipment inventories, building fire safety features, and compliance with federal reporting requirements.
Communications – Interpersonal Relationships
Interacts with MSU DPPS, EHS, IPF, ELFD, unit leadership, students, and community stakeholders.
Responsibility for Work of Others
No assigned direct supervision; may guide student or temporary assistants.
Work Hours: 7am-4pm Monday-Friday; some flexibility outside of normal office hours may be necessary based on operational needs.
Salary Range: $56,734-$70,918 (Commensurate with experience)
All positions in RHS are designated as critical status. In the event of a university closure, modification, or suspension of operations due to snow or other emergency condition, persons in this position are expected to make all reasonable attempts to report to work as scheduled for the duration of the closure/suspension. If a person has an approved remote work agreement to work a portion of their normally scheduled work hours remotely, they may be called upon to work on-site to serve the MSU community.
Minimum Requirements
Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in public safety, criminal justice, emergency management, or a related field; one to three years of experience in building access control, security operations, emergency planning, or safety compliance; requires knowledge of basic PC operations, email, internet, and incident reporting systems; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
