Position Summary
The laboratory of Dr. Christopher N. Topp at Michigan State University is recruiting a Research Assistant/Lab Manager to oversee lab operations across complementary research areas of root biology, phenomics, and translational crop science. The lab is jointly affiliated with the Departments of Plant, Soil and Microbial Sciences and Plant Biology, and the Plant Resilience Institute.
We seek a talented and highly organized scientist to support and advance multiple collaborative projects that integrate high-throughput phenotyping, advanced imaging, quantitative genetics, gene editing, and large-scale field experimentation to connect root system architecture to whole-plant performance and ecosystem outcomes. The position requires in depth knowledge of soil and crop sciences.
Duties focus on overseeing laboratory activities, tracking received samples from various experiments, supervising student lab activities, managing laboratory and field data in spreadsheets, ordering laboratory supplies, collecting and processing soil and plant samples in the field, and performing laboratory analyses on soil and plant samples, maintaining laboratory facilities, and others as needed. The work will sometimes require working long days in the field, often in hot weather and/or inclement conditions.
The successful candidate should have a demonstrated ability for independent and critical thinking, creativity, strong written/verbal communication, strong interpersonal skills, be able to coordinate between people from diverse fields, and have enthusiasm for learning and mastering new techniques.
The job requires someone who is diplomatic, proactive, highly organized with a good judgment and common sense, attentive to details, excellent at record keeping and problem-solving, with good time management and workload prioritization skills, able to manage multiple and competing priorities, work well with students, have strong skills in coordinating researchers, communicate effectively across disciplines, and have a strong commitment to a culturally diverse, inclusive, and evolving workplace.
Minimum Requirements
Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in Plant Biology, Soil Science or related science field; three to five years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in overseeing research projects and laboratory operations, operating and maintaining a variety of laboratory equipment, performing specialized and difficult analytical and research techniques, and designing research experiments in deep soil sampling fractionation, and gas efflux measurements; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
A valid driver’s license at the time of hire.
Desired Qualifications
- Ph.D. (or equivalent) in plant biology, soil science, or a related field
- A broad expertise and demonstrated success in related experimental approaches, especially deep soil sampling, fractionation, and gas efflux measurements.
