Position Summary
Research Assistant I will work to support the DOE-MSU Plant Research Department by overseeing the day-to-day operations of the Arabidopsis Service Center, general lab tasks to support a scientific laboratory and general scientific support for the department regarding safety and equipment and research support.
The position, along with undergraduates, will perform transformations on Arabidopsis thaliana and other plant organisms as a for-service support. This requires planting, pot making, plant care and handling of transgenic plants. The Research Assistant will assist in hiring, training and supervising the undergraduate personnel.
Provide laboratory assistance with managing general supplies, glassware and waste for a research laboratory. This includes, but is not limited to autoclaving, cleaning, preparing research items, stocking supplies, and safety compliance.
Support the department with Environmental Health and Safety. Assist with lab cleanouts and general use equipment. Future work may include research projects.
Minimum Requirements
Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in science such as biochemistry or other related science fields; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in standard laboratory procedures and safety requirements and performing analytical and research techniques in an area related to research being performed; experience with Microsoft Office suite; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. The position requires BSL-1 safety and Worker Protection Safety certifications.

Agrobacterium and plant transformations
Strong organizational skills, with ability to streamline and establish efficient work processes.
General research lab maintenance
Undergraduate management skills
Knowledge of the Environmental Health and Safety guidelines.
