Position Summary(Basic Job Function)

This is a temporary or an on-call position. Provides technical support. Responsibilities may include computer programming or operations; research support; medical patient care; technical equipment maintenance, repair, fabrication or operation; or other technical support functions.

Unit Position Summary

The Space Health and Community (SHAC) Lab in the Charles Stewart Mott Department of Public Health at Michigan State University is seeking a full-time Technical Aide to support geospatial analysis efforts. The successful candidate will join a National Institutes of Health grant-sponsored study focused on historical structural racism and child development across Michigan. This grant is led by Dr. Amber L. Pearson and Dr. Alex Burt. This position is ideal for a candidate with proven knowledge and experience in geographic information systems (GIS) and will be supervised by Dr. Pearson’s team.
 
Work Location: This position is hybrid-friendly, with required in-person days on campus in East Lansing.
 
Pay Range: $20 - $28/hour commensurate with experience, qualifications, and assigned responsibilities.
 
Position Overview: Responsibilities include developing and refining neighborhood-level spatial datasets; performing data documentation and quality assurance checks; creating maps and dashboards; participating in team meetings; and supporting the development of research protocols.
 
This is a 9-month position with the possibility of extension or transition to a full-time support staff role based on performance and project needs.

Desired Qualifications

Knowledge equivalent to what would normally be acquired through completion of a four-year college degree program in geography with a focus in GIS, or three to five years of GIS work experience, or a combination of education and experience. The candidate must have demonstrated experience using Esri ArcGIS Pro, or ArcGIS Desktop. The candidate must have overall knowledge of GIS data, including vector and raster data, database tables, relationship classes, etc.

Desired qualifications include experience or interest in image-to-text readers, contextual knowledge of Michigan cities, and previous experience developing a web dashboard.
