Position Summary(Basic Job Function)

This is a temporary or an on-call position. Provides professional support. Responsibilities may include general business, science, medical, agricultural or other professional support functions. Term: Temps can work two (2) nine (9) month terms with a week break in service in between and at the end of the second term terminate for three (3) months or switch to an on-call. On-Call allowed to work 1039 hours in any twelve (12) month period.

Unit Position Summary

The Michigan State University Libraries’ Turfgrass Information Center (TIC) is seeking an individual to serve as a Turfgrass Thesaurus Researcher and Editor. This position supports TIC operations by managing terminology data, assisting with the Turfgrass Thesaurus Project, and supporting student employees in tasks that require skills elevated above a typical student employee role.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Manage TICTHES data by creating and editing records and maintaining quality control.
  • Address backlogs of suggested terms and identify gaps in recently updated terminology within turfgrass literature.
  • Provide training, evaluation, professional development, and supervision for the Indexing Student Group, including the management of team workflow.
  • Assist full-time TIC staff with the oversight of daily operations within the Turfgrass Information Center.
  • Provide moderately complex bibliographic research assistance to library users, with a focus on teaching users how to navigate available tools.
  • Produce bi-weekly updates for full-time staff delivered via email to tgif@msu.edu.
  • Generate an end-of-term report detailing areas of focus (branches of the thesaurus), work completed, and basic statistical analysis of accomplishments.
  • Assist full-time staff with the ongoing Turfgrass Thesaurus Project and other duties as assigned.

 

Desired Qualifications

  • Extensive indexing experience is highly preferred.
  • A background or coursework in agronomy, turfgrass science, or a related field is strongly desired.
  • Ability to manage complex data and perform quality control with high attention to detail.
  • Previous experience overseeing, training, or managing student workflow is a plus.
