Position Summary

The Department of Mechanical Engineering (ME) at Michigan State University (MSU) invites applications for two fixed-term Teaching Specialist positions. These are nine-month academic-year appointments with primary responsibilities in teaching and service, with an initial term of three years and the potential for continued renewal based on instructional needs, funding, and performance. The anticipated teaching load for these positions is three courses per semester.

Both positions play an important role in supporting the department’s mission in undergraduate education. The successful candidates will contribute to the delivery of high-quality instruction, the enhancement of student learning experiences, and the continued development of instructional laboratories and course content. We are seeking individuals committed to excellence in teaching and interested in building long-term academic careers focused on instruction and student engagement.

Key Responsibilities

  • Teach undergraduate mechanical engineering courses and associated laboratory sections during the academic year (typically three courses per semester)
  • Support and, as appropriate, develop laboratory modules and instructional materials to enhance hands-on learning experiences
  • Effectively communicate course content and expectations to undergraduate students, fostering an engaging and inclusive learning environment
  • Collaborate with and provide guidance to graduate teaching assistants to support course delivery
  • Contribute to departmental service activities aligned with the instructional mission

Required Degree

Masters -Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a closely related field.

Minimum Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a closely related field
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively teach undergraduate-level mechanical engineering courses
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to engage diverse student populations
  • Ability to work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and graduate teaching assistants

Desired Qualifications

  • Expertise in areas such as manufacturing, design, mechanics, controls engineering, and experimental fluid mechanics or thermal sciences; candidates with expertise across any area of mechanical engineering will be considered
  • Experience in instructional laboratory development or hands-on teaching environments
  • Prior teaching experience in a higher education setting
