Virtual Systems Engineer II
Position Summary
The Virtual Systems team within MSU IT Infrastructure is responsible for providing and supporting the Virtual Server Infrastructure (VSI) service line, which delivers enterprise VMware‑based virtualization services to the Michigan State University community. VSI supports a wide range of administrative, academic, and research systems relied upon by faculty, staff, and students across the institution.
Reporting to the Virtual Systems Manager, the Virtual Systems Engineer II will primarily perform the following duties:
- Administer and maintain enterprise virtual server infrastructure hardware and software, including system maintenance and upgrades.
- Design, deploy, and specify virtualization infrastructure solutions supporting virtual server and storage platforms.
- Work with customers and end users to deliver new services and resolve technical issues through established support processes.
- Monitor system health, proactively identify developing issues, and resolve complex technical problems in collaboration with internal teams and vendors.
- Create and maintain technical documentation and contribute to continuous improvement of operational workflows.
- Participate in professional development activities and assist adjacent infrastructure teams as needed.

Minimum Requirements
This position requires knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program and three to five years of related and progressively more responsible experience in VMware/vSphere/Horizon or compatible virtualization platforms, data center administration, and networking; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Desired Qualifications
Experience with hyper‑converged storage technologies; familiarity with public cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud Platform; strong written and verbal communication skills; demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively in cross-functional teams; attention to detail; strong organizational and critical-thinking skills; and experience supporting the needs of students, faculty, staff, and business units.
