Position Summary

The Sexual Assault Healthcare Program (SAHP) Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) provides timely, non-judgmental, compassionate, trauma-informed medical-forensic care to individuals who have experienced sexual assault. Services include conducting medical forensic examinations, providing prophylactic treatment for pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections, photographic documentation, referrals for medical and psychological follow-up care, crisis support, and participation in legal proceedings when required. The Sexual Assault Healthcare Program serves survivors from the Michigan State University community and surrounding service areas and operates 24 hours a day, 365 days per year. This position provides direct patient care, participates in ongoing quality improvement activities, and supports the mission of the Center for Survivors through trauma-informed, survivor-centered practice. 

Responsibilities

Clinical Care

• Complete competency requirements and clinical orientation under supervision of an experienced SANE.
• Provide direct medical-forensic care to patients from the MSU community and surrounding counties including Ingham, Eaton, Clinton, and Shiawassee.
• Conduct comprehensive medical-forensic examinations using trauma-informed and evidence-based practices.
• Collect and preserve forensic evidence and maintain chain-of-custody requirements.
• Provide photographic documentation, medications, immunizations, emergency contraception, and prophylactic treatment as appropriate.
• Assess immediate medical, emotional, and safety needs and provide intervention as needed.
• Utilize specialized forensic equipment and documentation systems.

Survivor Advocacy and Collaboration

• Provide survivor-centered crisis intervention and emotional support.
• Collaborate with confidential advocates and interdisciplinary partners.
• Maintain strong working relationships with program leadership and community partners.

Program Operations and Quality Improvement

• Follow all program policies, procedures, protocols, and documentation standards.
• Participate in peer review, quality assurance, and continuous quality improvement activities.
• Assist with clinic operations, supplies, equipment, orientation, and training activities.
• Collect and report program, grant, and quality assurance data.
• Complete additional duties as assigned.

Professional Development

• Maintain all required licenses and certifications.
• Complete at least 24 hours of continuing education annually, including four hours related to sexual assault medical-forensic examinations.
• Pursue SANE certification as required and provide court testimony when necessary.

Minimum Requirements

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in Nursing; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible nursing experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Required: Current Michigan RN license; current BLS certification; ability to work nights, weekends, holidays, and occasional on-call shifts; ability to maintain confidentiality and professional standards of practice.

Desired Qualifications

• Minimum three years of registered nursing experience providing direct patient care.
• Completion of a 40-hour IAFN-approved Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner training.
• Previous SANE experience and/or SANE-A certification preferred.
• Excellent clinical assessment, critical thinking, and teamwork skills.
• Bilingual or multilingual proficiency preferred.

Work Hours

This position is scheduled at 50% employment. Hours may include evenings, overnights, weekends, holidays, and participation in an on-call rotation as needed.

Description of End Date

This is an off-dated position funded for one year from date of hire with possible extension pending funding approval.
