Talent Pipeline Training Program Manager

Position Summary

Michigan State University Advancement seeks a collaborative, detail-oriented, and innovative professional to serve as Talent Pipeline Training Program Manager and the Advance-U Internship Program.

This position is responsible for the planning, coordination, implementation, and continuous improvement of talent pipeline programs designed to introduce and develop future fundraising professionals. The Training Program Manager will partner with University Advancement leaders, subject matter experts, and participating units to create meaningful learning experiences, coordinate program activities, track participant progress, and evaluate program outcomes.

The Training Program Manager serves as the central coordinator for program operations and participant development, ensuring a high-quality experience that supports recruitment, onboarding, professional growth, and retention of emerging advancement talent.

 

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Program Management and Talent Development -

• Partner with Advancement leaders, subject matter experts, and campus stakeholders to identify and deliver learning opportunities that provide participants with exposure to fundraising, advancement operations, philanthropy, and career development.

• Develop long-range and immediate plans for comprehensive programs to fully develop an institutional pipeline of entry level development professionals and onboarding them, who have the foundational skill set to be successful fundraisers for Michigan State University.

• Develop performance-based metrics and corresponding timelines that are indicators of success for development officers and staff that would point to readiness for increased job responsibility and possible movement into higher roles within 12-18 months. Evaluate staff and development officers to ensure demonstrated success in these metrics.

• Continually improve, envision, and implement new components and assess opportunities to strengthen and expand the onboarding, student internship, and mentoring programs.

• Participate as part of the University Advancement Strategic Talent Management and Operations teams on strategic planning and initiatives, recruitment, budgeting, reporting, and special events.

• Assist in planning and implementing special purpose appeals as necessary and serve as a liaison to constituency-based academic leadership that may be without a primary development officer.

• Attend appropriate workshops and seminars to enhance professional development and suggest similar requirements necessary to bolster the professional skills of our entry level development professionals and the student internship program.

• Maintain awareness of emerging practices in talent development, experiential learning, internship programming, and workforce development.

• Act as a public goodwill ambassador for Michigan State University and all of its units.

 

Performance Metrics and Human Resources Support -

• Utilizing research and benchmarking other similar institutions and professional organizations (ie: CASE, ALN, etc) to create and implement first-year onboarding and/or probationary success measures. 

• Creating supervisor’s and manager’s training content on how to utilize success metrics and how to ensure new employees meet expectations and embrace a growth mindset. 

• Work in collaboration with the HR team to ensure that this work supports and aligns with the goals of University Advancement and also embraces the mission and vision of Michigan State University as a whole. 

• Plan and execute a “go-live” of a new employee performance goal setting process under the supervision and approval of the Director of Human Resources

• Supports the HR team with other assignments as needed

 

Researching and Benchmarking -

• Utilizing research and benchmarking other similar institutions and professional organizations (ie: CASE, ALN, etc) to create and implement first-year onboarding and/or probationary success measures.  

• Researching best practices on mentoring, rewards and recognition, and learning and development platform usage to enhance the programs utilized in University Advancement. 

 

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Direction is received from the Director of Strategic Talent Management.

 

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

This position does not exercise direct supervisory authority. The Training Program Manager may provide program guidance, coaching, and coordination for program participants and interns.

Minimum Requirements

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in Educational Systems development, Instructional Technology Systems, Instructional Science or a rigorous related educational program development area, and/or a field related to the area of expertise; three to five years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in the design, development and presentation of instructional programs using software or tools related to the educational programs being conducted; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Desired Qualifications

  • Advanced degrees and professional fundraising experience desirable.
  • Experience in developing and implementing experiential learning programs. Experience designing and implementing internship, onboarding, leadership development, or talent pipeline programs.
  • Experience working in higher education or a similarly complex organization.
  • Experience using data and metrics to evaluate program effectiveness.
  • Experience facilitating training or learning experiences.
  • Experience coordinating complex programs involving multiple stakeholders.
  • Strong project management, communication, and organizational skills.
