Position Summary

As a Support Cook, you will be at the heart of the action, blending the art of fine dining at the acclaimed State Room Restaurant with the thrill of large-scale banquet execution for Kellogg Center events. What You’ll Do

  • Craft & Plate: Prepare, cook, and beautifully plate assorted food items for banquets, including entrees, vegetables, and starches.
  • Fine Dining Prep: Whip up fresh, high-quality salads, sandwiches, and desserts specifically for the State Room Restaurant.
  • Collaborate & Adapt: Jump in to assist fellow cooks with diverse food prep tasks to ensure seamless event execution.
  • Manage & Replenish: Own your station by obtaining necessary ingredients, tracking inventory, and replenishing food supplies.
  • Lead & Mentor: Assist with training and leading MSU student employees and part-time team members in prep and plating techniques.
  • Organize Like a Pro: Create and conquer food service prep lists to guarantee accurate, consistent, and quality production.
  • Safety & Efficiency: Champion proper food handling techniques to optimize kitchen operations, eliminate waste, and prevent spoilage.
  • Maintain Excellence: Clean and maintain kitchen work areas and equipment, strictly adhering to MSU, State, and Federal health guidelines.

All positions in RHS are designated as critical status. In the event of a university closure, modification, or suspension of operations due to snow or other emergency condition, persons in this position are expected to make all reasonable attempts to report to work as scheduled for the duration of the closure/suspension. If a person has an approved remote work agreement to work a portion of their normally scheduled work hours remotely, they may be called upon to work on-site to serve the MSU community.

Minimum Requirements

  • Working knowledge of quantity food preparation and serving techniques.
  • One year satisfactory cooking experience in a large volume food service operation or an equivalent combination of technical training and experience.
  • Willingness to work a flexible shift.
  • Standards of personal hygiene consistent with sanitation rules and regulations.
  • Occasional lifting of 26 to 75 pounds is required.

Work Hours

Variable days. Typical shifts Monday through Friday 6:00 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. Weekend availability required to include all football game days, special events at the hotel and holidays including Easter, Mother's Day and graduation weekends.
