Position Summary
This position provides leadership, oversight, and strategic direction for the Advising Services program within the Office for Civil Rights and Title IX. The role supports the University’s commitment to fostering an inclusive, equitable, and safe environment by ensuring parties involved in OCR grievance processes receive consistent, ethical, trauma-informed, and procedurally sound guidance. The Assistant Director for Support and Intake provides expertise, supervision, and work direction to the Investigation, Support and Resolution Advising Services team, including advisor assignment, workload management, training, policy interpretation, quality assurance, resource development, and continuous improvement of advising practices. The Assistant Director and may serve as an Advisor in select cases when appropriate, ensuring that advising is conducted with integrity, professionalism, and adherence to applicable policies.
- Leads the ISR Advising Services program and team. This includes supervising the advisors and assigning their work. The Assistant Director monitors workload and determines whether any external advising support is needed due to volume and/or potential conflict.
- Supervises, trains, coaches, and evaluates Advising Services staff, providing regular feedback, professional development, and performance support.
- Develops and implements quality assurance practices for advising services, including review of documentation, communication standards, case/hearing preparation, and adherence to grievance procedures.
- Provides strategic oversight of advising services to ensure parties receive consistent, accurate, and policy-aligned procedural guidance throughout OCR grievance, investigation, hearing, and resolution processes.
- Develops standardized advising materials, templates, scripts, checklists, and guidance documents to support advisor consistency, quality assurance, and party understanding of OCR processes.
- Consults with advisors regarding complex, high-impact, or sensitive cases to support ethical advising practices, procedural fairness, and trauma-informed engagement.
- Reviews advising practices and case trends to identify gaps, improve service delivery, and re commend advising protocols, training, and resources.
- Maintains awareness of institutional policies, state and federal regulations, and emerging practices related to Title IX, civil rights, procedural advising, supportive measures, and grievance resolution.
- Serves as an advisor in select cases as needed and appropriate (i.e., when the other party has engaged their own external/attorney advisor). Provides caring and trauma-informed support and assistance to the assigned party throughout the duration of the grievance process/procedures.
- Serves as a subject-matter resource for OCR staff and campus partners regarding the role of advisors, party rights and responsibilities, and procedural support within OCR processes.
- Forms and maintains functional and collegial working relationships with support services across the University and greater community, including MSUPD, CAPS, REHS, EL PD, Private Therapist, etc. Effectively interacts and communicates with faculty, staff, and internal and external partners about OCR Advising Services.
- Serves as a thought partner to the Support and Intak e team on supportive measure implementation, pregnancy and parenting Modifications for students, and general intake practices, supporting consistency, responsiveness, and alignment with University policy and OCR procedures.
- Serves on task forces or committees as assigned and, when needed, acts on behalf of the Director of Support and Intake in the Director’s absence.

Minimum Requirements
Knowledge equivalent to that which would normally be acquired by the completion of a bachelor’s degree in a related field and five to eight years of progressively more responsible and relevant work experience; or an equivalent combination of skills and experience. Must have experience and knowledge of adjudication of disputes in a university setting in addition to experience previously serving in a role which required advising parties through formal grievances processes which include engaging in cross examination and/or direct questioning for the purpose of making findings of fact.
Desired Qualifications
- A Master's degree
- Five to eight years of progressively more responsible and relevant work experience in assisting persons engaged in the adjudication of disputes in a university setting or equivalently complex organization.
- Experience working in a higher education setting as a procedural advisor providing advising services to parties navigating a formal grievance process.
- Familiarity with Title IX formal grievance procedures, administrative procedures and hearing processes.
- Experience developing processes and supervising full-time staff.
