Working/Functional Title
Upward Bound Program Coordinator
Position Summary
Michigan State University’s Upward Bound Program seeks a full-time Program Coordinator to support the academic achievement, college readiness, and postsecondary success of participating high school students. This year-round position coordinates academic-year and summer programming, provides individualized academic and college-planning support, maintains student records and program data, assists with recruitment and federal grant reporting, and collaborates with students, families, schools, and university partners.
The Program Coordinator also plays a key role in planning and implementing the six-week Summer Academy, including curriculum, staffing, student activities, college visits, transportation, and residential programming. The position requires a highly organized, student-centered professional who can manage multiple priorities, build strong relationships, and support the program in meeting U.S. Department of Education TRIO goals and performance objectives. Evening, weekend, travel, and summer residential responsibilities are required.
Upward Bound Program Coordinator is responsible for providing engaging, student-centered academic instruction to program participants during the six-week summer academy and weekly Monday sessions throughout the academic year. The program coordinator will develop the schedule for all academic and summer programming in conjunction with the Associate Director/Director of CAI. The coordinator will support students' academic growth, college readiness, civic engagement, and personal development through interactive learning, project-based instruction, and culturally responsive teaching practices. This position requires a level of independence to respond to requests from the Project Director, university personnel, school administrators, community partners, students, and parents within defined grant regulations, guidelines, and procedures.
Upward Bound provides fundamental support to participants in their preparation for college entrance. The program provides opportunities for participants to succeed in their pre-college performance and ultimately in their higher education pursuits. Upward Bound serves: high school students from low-income families; and high school students from families in which neither parent holds a bachelor's degree. The goal of Upward Bound is to increase the rate at which participants complete secondary education and enroll in and graduate from institutions of postsecondary education. https://www.ed.gov/grants-and-programs/grants-higher-education/federal-trio-programs/upward-bound-program-84047a
