Required Qualifications and Education:
Either 1) a Master’s degree in Mathematics by August 31, 2018 or 2) a Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics with a Master’s degree in a related field and at least 18 graduate credit hours in mathematics. Evidence of effective teaching of precalculus mathematics; core competence in the content of intermediate algebra, college algebra, and trigonometry; evidence of reflective thinking about the teaching and learning of mathematics at the precalculus level; willingness to employ a variety of teaching methodologies, including the promotion of student use of appropriate technological tools to develop understanding of mathematics; and strong teaching recommendations.
The standard teaching load for affiliate faculty is 12-15 credits per semester (4-5 courses, usually 2-3 preps), consisting primarily of precalculus mathematics. Affiliate faculty can normally expect to teach 5 days per week, with some classes meeting evenings or early mornings. GVSU classes are scheduled between 8am and 9pm. Most classes meet on our Allendale campus, but affiliate faculty members occasionally teach courses on our Grand Rapids campus. Besides teaching, responsibilities include attending regular course instructor meetings. There are opportunities for professional development and department service, but neither is mandatory. Employment begins August 6, 2018.
This position is a full-time, nine-month contract position in the Department of Mathematics with initial salary commensurate with qualifications. The initial contract is for one year; pending successful review, affiliate faculty contracts renew for three years, with subsequent reviews occurring in the 2nd year of each 3-year term. Salary: Competitive and commensurate with qualifications.
