Job Summary

Works as part of a team including nurse practitioners, registered nurses, administrative support staff, and clinical students from a variety of healthcare disciplines.  Performs activities that support all aspects of patient flow such as checking vital signs, obtaining and documenting pertinent medical and social history, and effectively communicating with other members of the health care team. Performs clerical functions including scheduling, patient registration, referral coordination, and medical records processing as needed, along with other duties as assigned. Mentors or precepts students and volunteers assisting in any of these activities.


Essential Functions:

  • Comply with appropriate regulations including HIPAA, CLIA and OSHA
  • Follow established clinical protocols as applicable
  • Appropriately document patient interactions
  • Manage patient phone calls and messages as appropriate for scope of practice
  • Perform daily patient flow functions with demonstrated ability to effectively multitask when managing patient flow responsibilities 
  • Critically think when presented with unfamiliar problems
  • Safely administer injections and perform venipuncture
  • Attend staff meetings, trainings, and clinic community activities
  • Provide care consistent with a patient centered approach through specific actions such as identifying and addressing social determinants of health
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

  • Graduate of an accredited medical assistant training program
  • Current Medical Assistant Certification in the State of Michigan
  • Experience in a medical office or similar setting
  • Experience with an electronic medical records system
  • Effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills with the ability to comfortably interact with diverse populations
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team-orientated environment with a strong customer-service orientation
  • Ability to handle patient and organizational information in a confidential manner
  • Ability to demonstrate competency with a Windows-based computer system, including a basic understanding of e-mail, internet and computer navigation, ability to use other software (e.g. Microsoft Word, Excel, etc.) as required to perform essential functions of the job
  • Ability to hear speech, speak, utilize near-far vision and fine motor skills
  • Ability to perform continuously detailed tasks with frequent interruptions and work prioritization
  • Position requires frequent standing, walking, and occasional bending, stooping, twisting, and lifting
