Halfords is midway through a significant transformation of its technology platforms across the group. At the heart of this lies integration – the means of providing access to information and services wherever and whenever required. As such, we have invested in an initiative to build a set of strategic APIs, abstracting our back-end systems and building a true layered approach to integration. We are looking for an individual to join us to continue and lead this journey.

As our Enterprise Integration Architect you'll be accountable for architecting and driving the group-wide Halfords Integration platform. This is a key role, liaising with and influencing projects, technology decisions and business stakeholders. The role holder will be the Product Owner for the strategic integration platform, managing features and design requests.

 

Key Responsibilities

1. Planning

  • Develop and maintain the Target Architecture for Integration, ensuring full alignment with Business and IT Strategies
    • Recognise and encourage innovative use of technology
    • Create the roadmap to articulate steps required to achieve desired state as outlined in the Target Architecture
    • Work with other IT And Business stakeholders to drive the development and adoption of the Target Architecture
  • Collaborate with the Halfords business and technology teams to analyse, design, document and validate business needs as they apply to integration.
  • Determine integration and transformation requirements for moving data between applications, ensuring interoperability of applications with database and data warehouse/data mart environments

2. Financial Responsibilities

  • Support the development and qualification of the IT investment plan
  • Support the budget development process for specific initiatives to maximise the longer-term business case

3. Operational Responsibilities

  • Be the recognised integration architecture expert and have overall accountability for the following in area of expertise:
    • Integrity of the Target Architecture for Integration, by making sure all of the various components are integrated and reconciling any conflicting concerns of different stakeholders
    • Policies, standards and guidelines that direct the selection, development, implementation and use of integration technology across the company
  • Architecture principles and standards for integration:
    • Ensure the standards and Roadmap are understood within IT and across the Business Units
    • Drive the adoption of the standards through supporting the Solution Architects
    • Ensuring adherence to the target architecture through supporting (as required) design / architecture authorities
  • Manage exceptions to the target architecture
    • Preparing and reviewing technical solution designs; close collaboration with system engineers, ensuring solutions are developed to expectations and best practice
    • Identifying the IT and Business risks in architectural decisions and roadmaps
    • Ensuring that investments are made which best support the commercial requirements of the organisation
    • Working with external suppliers to ensure that the appropriate technology direction is aligned with Target Architecture for Integration
    • Ability to design security policies, define principles, security controls and measures and design to prevent security threats, mitigate security risks and vulnerabilities
    • Proficient in preparing and reviewing technical solution designs, ability to closely collaborate with system engineers ensuring solutions are developed to expectations and best practice
  • Keep abreast with developments in the IT industry to ensure that integration architecture is kept in line with industry standard and only deviate for commercial benefit. Co-ordinate the identification and assessment of new and emerging technologies and promote awareness among staff and business.
  • Be recognised for depth and breadth of industry to provide guidance to solution architects on projects
  • Support the design of security policies, principles, security controls and measures as they apply to integration, and associated design to prevent security threats, mitigate security risks and vulnerabilities
  • Become involved in high-profile, large-scale complex projects and programmes

4. Stakeholders

  • Communicate the Integration Target Architecture and Roadmap
  • Develop and maintains stakeholder engagement maps
  • Advise Halfords Stakeholders with strategic guidance related to Integration
  • Set up and maintain strong relationships with stakeholders by effectively managing expectations and inspiring confidence
  • Influence strategic Information Management approach and guidance for Halfords Business Teams focused on API usage and governance

5. Leadership and People Management (or Teamwork)

  • Develop, coach, motivate, energise and inspire fellow team members
  • Participate in and contribute to industry, supplier and peer forums to influence the development of initiatives that are innovative and deliver value to the enterprise
  • Oversee the quality and appropriateness of the work performed to ensure it delivers measurable Business benefits
  • Use depth and breadth of industry knowledge to co-ordinate the identification and assessment of new and emerging technologies and promote awareness among staff and business management to enhance the solution architecture

 

Key Skills/Experience

  • A proven track record in a business-aware, Senior IT Integration architecture role, ideally within a customer-facing FTSE 250 business.
  • Experience of developing and implementing integration platforms and architectures in a dynamic environment.
  • Experience of working with API toolsets such as Mulesoft, Azure, Apigee or Mashery.
  • Experience of integration patterns and techniques such as microservices and event-driven architecture
  • Excellent business acumen, ideally with Retail bias
  • Strong analytical and negotiation skills

  • Able to articulate and summarise findings clearly and succinctly to senior managers
