Software Architect III – Life Insurance Solutions ART (Train Architect)
I/S Life Insurance Solutions | Mutual of Omaha Information Services

Mutual of Omaha is seeking a forward‑thinking Software Architect to turn business needs into clear architecture requirements and bring a strong customer perspective to our Life Insurance Solutions technology decisions.  Operating as the Train Architect, you will serve as the architectural authority for the LIS ART by directing architecture traffic, ensuring alignment across teams, and partnering closely with enterprise architects and senior IS leadership to maintain a consistent, forward-looking technology vision. In this role, you’ll help drive key strategic initiatives, applying Artificial Intelligence (AI tools) to drive modernization of core platforms such as improving application and underwriting experiences, enhancing the customer and associate experience, and accelerating delivery through innovation.  We’re looking for a technically strong, collaborative leader who can influence teams and deliver modern, secure, scalable solutions.   As the Train Architect for the Life Insurance Solutions Agile Release Train (ART), you'll partner with business and technology teams to build solutions that support multiple products and use cases across the value stream. From day one, you'll play a lead role in two high-priority initiatives: shaping the API architecture strategy for our enterprise eApplication (eApp) platform designed to deliver a consistent producer experience across all product lines, and advancing our embedded insurance strategy, which explores new digital partnership channels that bring life insurance to customers at the point of need.

WHAT WE CAN OFFER YOU:

  • Estimated Salary: Minimum: $170,000 - $190,000, plus annual bonus opportunity
  • Benefits and Perks: 401(k) plan with a 2% company contribution and 6% company match
  • Work-life balance with vacation, personal time, and paid holidays. See our benefits and perks page for details. https://www.mutualofomaha.com/careers/life-at-mutual/benefits-and-perks
  • Growth & Development: A clear architecture career path with opportunities to grow into an Architect IV (director-level) role, transition into engineering or people leadership, or expand your experience through cross-functional exposure across other Agile Release Trains. We invest in our architects and actively support your next move, whatever direction that takes you
  • Eligibility: Applicants must not now, nor in the future, require employment sponsorship

This role is classified as remote; however, periodic in-person attendance will be required at times for activities such as quarterly or project planning, training, or other business-critical meetings.

WHAT YOU’LL DO:

  • Architecture Leadership:  Design and implement advanced software solutions, enabling loosely coupled enterprise-scale components across the teams.   Drive legacy modernization by decomposing monolithic systems into loosely coupled, event-driven microservices architectures.
  • Strategy & Planning:  Collaborate with enterprise architects and business stakeholders to define a vision and roadmap for solution modernization, experimentation, and governance aligned to strategic outcomes.
  • Innovation & Prototyping:  Lead the development and identification of use cases and PoCs, as well as prioritize maintenance and automation opportunities.  Explore “what-if” scenarios, whiteboarding, and design sprints to evaluate new opportunities and validate business impact.
  • Governance & Ethics:  Establish and uphold standards for software quality, stewardship, ethical AI practices, and secure solution deployment while promoting regulatory compliance and trust.
  • Mentorship & Enablement:  Coach engineers and analysts in feature engineering, AI use and development,  fostering a culture of curiosity and continuous improvement.  Promote knowledge sharing and establish best practices across teams.
  • Collaboration & Integration:  Integrate solutions with microservices, event-based architectures, and external business partners, ensuring scalability, observability, and operational readiness.

WHAT YOU’LL BRING:

  • 5+ years of experience in leading software architecture initiatives, including cloud-native platforms, software development lifecycle management, governance, and CI/CD.
  • Proficiency in Java, Python, RDBMS, and event-based cloud technologies (AWS preferred), with experience deploying and maintaining APIs.  Experience in prototyping, experimentation, refining scope, and scripting/automation to build, test, and maintain software solutions.
  • Strong and mature understanding of, and commitment to, software engineering and architecture principles and governance.
  • Exceptional analytical, problem solving, and decision-making skills with the ability to interpret data, manage risk, and provide sound, innovative recommendations.
  • Advocacy for change and bias for action toward results as a trusted advisor.
  • This role supports a hybrid work model for candidates based in the Omaha, NE area, or may be performed fully remote for candidates located elsewhere in the United States
  • Comfortable working in agile environments and guiding architecture for Agile Release Trains (ART).  Excellent communication, stakeholder engagement, and cross-functional leadership skills.

PREFERRED:

  • Financial services, Insurance or regulated industry experience
  • TOGAF Certified.
  • SAFe certification (SA, SPC, or RTE-adjacent experience)
  • C4 architecture methodology experience
  • Experience with AWS – S3, Bedrock, SageMaker, EC2, Connect, CDK, SDK, etc.).
  • Practical familiarity with autonomous AI systems
  • Participation in industry groups and/or communities of practice.
