Assistant Professor of Music (Continuing Track), School of Music, College of Arts and Sciences, University of Delaware

INTRODUCTION/POSITION:

The School of Music in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Delaware invites applications for an Assistant Professor in Music Theory, continuing track. This is a full-time, fully benefited position with a focus on teaching. The School of Music is a vibrant community of musicians, educators, and scholars, providing dynamic performances and academic experiences for a diverse and inclusive community of students across the many areas and disciplines at the University of Delaware. RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in music theory, such as: core aural skills and theory courses, graduate theory review, undergraduate and graduate seminars, and other elective courses within the candidate’s area(s) of expertise.
• The anticipated teaching load is 9–12 credits per semester and determined in consultation with the director.
• Advise undergraduate theory majors on theses and presentations, and serve on graduate student oral exam committees
• Maintain an active interest in the field of music theory pedagogy and the scholarship of teaching and learning.
• Participate in school activities, governance, and other service to the college, and/or university, as workload allows.

QUALIFICATIONS:

We are seeking an exceptional candidate in music theory who possesses an inclusive perspective on the field with experience teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The successful candidate will have an earned doctorate (PhD or DMA) in music theory or composition (ABDs will be considered); have a record of university-level teaching experience; and show evidence of student-centered, progressive teaching practices–with a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. Responsibilities will include: Teaching music theory courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels, such as core aural skills and theory courses, graduate theory review, graduate seminars, and elective courses as assigned.

CONTINUING TRACK (CT):

The continuing track is UD’s full-time, continuing faculty line, similar to the tenure track. CT faculty enjoy contracts that increase in length over time and, like tenure-track faculty, receive full and generous benefits, including family-friendly benefits, as part of their compensation package. CT faculty with terminal degrees hold professorial rank and have a path to promotion up to full professor; CT faculty without terminal degrees are at the instructor rank and have a parallel path to promotion. THE UD SCHOOL OF MUSIC: Our mission in the School of Music is to provide the best educational opportunities for music majors’ professional development as artists, scholars, creators, and educators.
