Analyzes and interprets information obtained from the patient, medical records, and current available resource information. This involves the assessment of patient pedigrees, a review of medical, physical, and psychosocial status, dysmorphology assessments, interpreting genetic laboratory and diagnostic tests. Serves as a resource of information for referring physicians. Provides comprehensive teaching of patient or families regarding the etiology, inheritance, incidence carrier risks, genetic testing, test results and their implications for the individual and the family members. Provides crisis and grief counseling when needed and makes appropriate referrals. Responsible for developing and implementing educational programs for the community physicians as well as interdisciplinary staff at UH. The Genetic Counselor has a role in case management as they assist in making referrals to sub specialists, community services, resources and identifying financial coverage and authorization of services based upon individual patient needs. Interventions involve a disciplined application of professional knowledge related to genetic technologies, theories and resources for a broad range of problems.
