TEMPORARY END DATE: This position is temporary and ends on or before June 30, 2026. Any continuation beyond June 30, 2026 is contingent upon satisfactory performance and available funding.

PAY PLAN: 12-month

ANTICIPATED HIRING RANGE: Starting salary upon appointment is not expected to exceed $4,150 per month.

CSU CLASSIFICATION SALARY RANGE: $4,150 - $5,076

PAY BASIS: Monthly

POSITION PURPOSE: The Housing Navigator Assistant, under direct supervision of the Director of the Center for Accessibility and Essential Needs, provides trainee level support to students experiencing housing insecurity, including those who are unhoused or displaced due to financial hardship, unsafe living environments, or unforeseen housing changes. The position assists students in navigating housing resources, applying for rental assistance, and connecting with campus and community services. The incumbent performs structured and procedural tasks following established guidelines to help students secure and maintain stable housing. This position plays a supportive role in the Rapid Rehousing & Housing Security Program, a four-year grant through the Chancellor’s Office focused on increasing housing stability.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:        

Housing/Rental Support & Resource Connection

  1. Under direct supervision, assist students with basic housing inquiries and refer them to appropriate campus and community resources.
  2. Provide guidance on applying for rental assistance programs, eviction prevention services, and emergency housing support following standard policies and procedures.
  3. Assist with conducting intake assessments using established criteria to determine student needs and recommend appropriate next steps in coordination with the Director.
  4. Offer general information on lease agreements, tenant rights, and responsibilities to support students in securing stable housing.
  5. Provide support to Housing & Residential Life to address housing instability and support students living on campus.
  6. Assist in coordinating temporary or emergency housing placements as needed, including on campus housing options.
  7. Maintain communication with students receiving housing support to ensure continued stability.
  8. Refer students to campus services such as the Counseling Center, Campus Advocate, CARE Team, and Essential Needs resources.

Outreach & Education Support

  1. Assist in the coordination and promotion of outreach events to increase awareness of housing resources and services.
  2. Support the development and delivery of educational workshops on housing stability, tenant rights, and financial literacy.
  3. Gather and compile student feedback from outreach events to assist with assessing program effectiveness.
  4. Work with campus partners to assist in distributing information and connect students to available support services.

Community Engagement

  1. Support efforts to establish and maintain partnerships with community-based organizations (CBOs) to enhance housing resources for students.
  2. Assist in gathering and sharing information about local housing assistance programs and services.
  3. Attend grant-related and housing-related meetings as assigned to stay informed of available resources and program updates.
  4. Participate in CSU systemwide workgroup meetings to learn best practices in housing support for students.

Data Entry & Reporting Support

  1. Maintain records of student interactions and referrals in Maxient or other designated systems.
  2. Assist in tracking housing support services and compiling data for grant reporting and program assessment.
  3. Contribute to the preparation of reports on student housing outcomes and program impact.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE – Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration or a job-related field, and some experience in student services. Specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the appropriate knowledge and abilities may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis. Equivalent amounts of graduate level job related education may be substituted for the required experience.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE & ABILITIES (SKA’s) –

  • Regular and reliable attendance is required.
  • Working knowledge of the basic principles of individual and group behavior; research and observation techniques for the purpose of recording, classifying, and interpreting factual information and the techniques and methods of interviewing.
  • Ability to gather and analyze data; reason logically, draw valid conclusions and make appropriate recommendations.
  • Ability to participate in and contribute to group meetings, conferences and interviews.
  • Ability to clearly express ideas and recommendations orally and write clear and concise reports.
  • Understanding of general student support services, including housing assistance programs, rental assistance, and eviction prevention resources.
  • Familiarity with university policies and community resources related to student housing.
  • Ability to clearly explain general housing options, resources, and application processes to students.
  • Skill in performing structured tasks such as intake assessments, referrals, and case documentation while adhering to established protocols.
  • Capacity to assess student needs and recommend appropriate referrals or next steps based on available resources.
  • Ability to recognize when a situation requires escalation to a supervisor or another department.
  • Ability to maintain accurate case records, track student interactions, and compile basic reports.
  • Demonstrated customer service experience requiring a very high level of diplomacy and professionalism.
  • Ability to use tact and diplomacy to effectively handle a broad range of high level and sensitive interpersonal situations with diverse personalities, and to respond appropriately to conflicts and problems.
  • Ability to initiate, establish, and foster communication and teamwork by maintaining a positive, cooperative, productive work atmosphere in the University with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within a diverse population and with those from various cultural backgrounds.
  • Excellent communication skills; ability to effectively communicate information in a clear and understandable manner.
  • Thorough knowledge of English grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
  • Ability to interpret, communicate and apply policies and procedures in assisting students with housing-related concerns.
  • Ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to set own priorities to coordinate multiple assignments with fluctuating and time-sensitive deadlines.
  • Excellent computer skills and competence with a variety of computer applications including word-processing, spreadsheets, databases, on-line systems, Internet as well as online calendaring and email.
  • Working knowledge of or ability to quickly learn University infrastructure.
  • This is a trainee level position to be occupied by the incumbent no longer than twelve (12) months. Upon successful completion of the training, the incumbent is expected to be able to perform the duties of the Student Services Professional I, Range B classification under general supervision.
  • Must be willing to travel and attend training programs off-site for occasional professional development.
  • Must be able to work overtime, occasional holidays, and adjust working hours to meet special jobs.  May be called back periodically to perform work as needed on an emergency basis.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s degree in social work, counseling, student affairs, higher education administration, or a related field.
  • Previous experience working within the California State University (CSU) system or a similar higher education institution, with knowledge of CSU policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrated skills in an institutional/educational environment possessing a customer-oriented and service-centered attitude.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: LIGHT WORK – involves mainly sitting, up to 25% standing or walking; lifting medium weight objects limited to 25 pounds.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS:

SCREENING: Only those applicants possessing experience most directly related to the immediate needs of the office will be invited to appear before a Qualifications Appraisal Board for the purpose of appraising training, experience, and interest in the position.
