Position Description

Job Summary

The purpose of Campus Health & Wellbeing (CH&W) is to help students achieve and maintain academic success and lifelong health and wellbeing by providing timely and appropriate primary and acute health care, disease and injury prevention education, professional mental health, outreach, educational services and campus consultations. The role of this position is to plan and assume responsibility for providing health and clinical management of common chronic or urgent medical problems, injuries, and minor psychosocial conditions.

Reporting to the Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs Health and Wellbeing, and under minimal direction, this position helps to provide overall leadership, planning, and management for Campus Health & Wellbeing and delivery of clinical services. Within their applicable scope of practice, the Director of Clinical Services (DCS) works collaboratively with a healthcare team to deliver primary care to Cal Poly students.

The DCS provides leadership in the development, implementation, and on-going day-to-day management of medical operations; establishes and monitors priorities and progress toward the Health Services goals; determines methods, techniques, systems and materials to support the program, including creation and revision of policies and procedures related to the delivery of medical services.

The DCS has significant responsibility to organize work to achieve broadly stated goals for the department. Identifies objectives, directs programs, develops strategies and policies, manages human, financial, and often physical resources, and functions with a high degree of autonomy. Oversees the accountability and stewardship of campus resources (operational, financial, and human) in a manner consistent with broadly defined compliance goals and objectives. Proactively assesses risks to establish systems and procedures to protect organizational assets.

The DCS may be responsible for the clinical and personnel supervision of other licensed health care professionals (i.e., Advanced Practice Providers, Registered Nurses, Medical Assistants).

Key Qualifications

  • Must have advanced skills and abilities needed to set direction and provide strong leadership for a medical unit; skilled at managing multiple levels of clinical/healthcare professionals
  • Ability to work in a highly collaborative manner; ability to facilitate work of multi-disciplinary teams
  • Advanced communication and interpersonal skills
  • Thorough knowledge of and the ability to effectively apply the principles and methods essential to the assigned medical specialty, and in the diagnosis and treatment of common medical disorders, and in the assessment and response to emergency situations
  • Possess current competency in administration of psychotropic medications in primary care
  • Thorough knowledge of community resources in medical treatment and public health practices

Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree in health professional area and/or equivalent experience/training. Registered nurse, Physician Assistant, Nurse Practitioner, Doctor of Medicine, or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine. Five years of increasingly responsible relevant experience in an ambulatory care clinic or similar practice, urgent care, or private practice.

Total Compensation:

Salary commensurate with the background and experience of the individual selected.
