Job Summary

Under the direction of the Senior Director of Development, the Director of Development is primarily responsible for providing advancement and fundraising services designed to increase private support for the priorities of CAFES and the University. The Director of Development is responsible for identifying prospects, coordinating, and executing visits, and appropriately developing and implementing cultivation strategies that promote CAFES and the University's fundraising priorities. The incumbent is also responsible for assisting with gift documentation and preparing related reports as needed. The Director of Development represents the University by outreaching to alumni, friends, parents, key volunteers, and industry partners. The incumbent will be responsible for communicating effectively and collaborating with on-campus personnel, including staff and management in central University Development to foster a team approach.  

Expectations and goals include the following:

  • Identify, qualify, cultivate, solicit and steward prospective donors for major, leadership, and planned gifts to college/unit.
  • Develop and manage a personal portfolio of 120 prospective major prospects/donors, while maintaining confidentiality.
  • Conduct 150 donor visits annually.
  • Solicit 20 major gifts ($25,000 or more) annually.
  • Raise $600,000 or more annually.

 College Summary

The College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences (CAFES) Advancement Office is responsible for all aspects of external relations for the College including strategic planning for and implementation of fundraising programs designed to secure growing levels of private funding in support of the mission and vision of CAFES. The CAFES Advancement team serves and partners with the College’s leadership, faculty, and staff, and works closely with UDAE to achieve the strategies and goals for the College and the University.

The role of the University Development and Alumni Engagement (UDAE) is to foster strong relationships with internal and external partners to enhance support for Cal Poly. UDAE establishes and implements an overall advancement program, including coordinating fundraising, donor relations, gift processing, trust and endowment management, training and systems support for the donor database, and Cal Poly Foundation support and administration.

Key Qualifications

  • Demonstrated customer service experience requiring a very high level of diplomacy and professionalism.
  • Ability to identify, organize and conduct potential major gift donor contacts.
  • Demonstrated experience in developing and cultivating contacts within the advancement community.
  • Demonstrated experience and success in major gifts fundraising, marketing, planned giving, or other related professional fields, preferably in a university setting.
  • Ability to thrive in an environment of change.
  • Knowledge of the financial structure of donations, including cash, gifts-in-kind, stocks, and securities.

Education and Experience

A Bachelor's Degree and four years of progressively responsible professional experience in development, major gifts fundraising, donor relations, marketing, sales, planned giving, or other related professional fields is required. 

Total Compensation

Salary commensurate with the background and experience of the individual selected.

The person holding this position is considered a 'mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.

This position may be "Designated" under California State University's Conflict of Interest Code. This would require the filing of a Statement of Economic Interest on an annual basis and the completion of training within 6 months of assuming office and every 2 years thereafter.

This position classification has been defined as "Exempt" and is not subject to the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).

Full-time management (MPP) employees are required to disclose outside employment at the time of hire or within thirty (30) days of taking additional outside employment subsequent to the time of hire.
