MECHANICAL ENGINEERING TENURE-TRACK FACULTY POSITION - The Mechanical Engineering Department in the College of Engineering at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo is seeking to fill an academic year, tenure-track position in the broad area of thermal fluids and a focus in Energy Systems with appointment beginning September 14, 2023. Preferred specializations include renewable energy generation, energy storage, building energy management, and energy transmission/transport. The Cal Poly College of Engineering strongly values diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), especially in the classroom and among its areas of study. This position is part of a college-wide cluster of searches designed to promote inclusive and equity-minded teaching strategies as well as increase curricular coverage of the intersection of engineering and computing with societal challenges, particularly around DEI issues. In addition to the standard new faculty support, candidates selected through this DEI cluster hire will be given additional start-up funds to support their work in DEI. Once hired, candidates will collaborate with their dean and others to develop a plan for utilizing these funds.


Candidates must hold a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering or closely related field in the general area of thermal fluids and are expected to demonstrate a commitment to, or potential for, teaching excellence and scholarly activity at the university level. Cal Poly is committed to the teacher-scholar model. As teachers, all faculty members are expected to exhibit strong pedagogic skills and to remain proficient and current in their disciplines. As scholars, faculty members are expected to maintain competency in their field and enhance the vitality of our programs through undergraduate and masters level research. As colleagues, it is expected that every faculty member performs service activities at all levels of the University. An ability to communicate effectively and work cooperatively with students, faculty, staff, and administration from diverse ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds is essential. Candidates must have significant experience in working with underrepresented students in research, teaching, service, advising, mentoring or community engagement.

The ideal candidate will show evidence of attention to issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion across their teaching, scholarship, and service.

Applicants must submit a diversity statement which focuses on evidence of the applicant’s commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion, and a description of how you will demonstrate a commitment in these areas in teaching, research, and/or service at Cal Poly. Potential topics may include but are not limited to: implementing inclusive classroom environments, the intersection of DEI in your research/scholarship, mentoring students with diverse backgrounds, outreach to under-represented student populations, implementing bias mitigation and previous professional development in diversity and inclusion topics.


Preference will be given to candidates with demonstrated excellence in university level teaching and research, experience with laboratory-based instruction, and willingness to teach in multiple areas of the undergraduate and graduate curriculum. The candidate is expected to be driven with a passion for teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels, as well as be engaged in scholarship. Prior engineering industry experience and professional licensure is preferable, but not required.
