Position Description

Job Summary

Under general supervision of the Facilities Maintenance Manager for Architectural Trades, the Lead Carpenter works with and is in charge of a small group or crew of skilled Carpenters and semi-skilled assistants involved in completing the work outlined in the series overview.  The work of the Lead Carpenter is distinguished from the Carpenter by the additional responsibilities of providing lead work direction to several journey-level crafts workers and semi-skilled assistants, laying out and coordinating the work flow for jobs, and preparing materials lists and ordering supplies for jobs.  Unlike the supervising Carpenter, the Lead Carpenter spends the majority of time working as a skilled carpenter but has ancillary lead work and project planning responsibilities.

Department Summary

Facilities Management and Development (FMD), a unit within the Administration and Finance Division (AFD), is responsible for the planning, design, construction, operations, maintenance, and repair of university facilities, grounds, and infrastructure. FMD consists of five critical and interdependent support departments, including Customer & Business Services; Energy, Utilities, & Sustainability; Environmental Health & Safety; Facilities Planning & Capital Projects; and Facilities Operations. Key Qualifications

  • Thorough knowledge of methods, materials, tools and equipment used in both rough and finished carpentry; various types and grades of lumber; hand and power carpentry tools.
  • Thorough knowledge of applicable state safety codes and regulations pertaining to the carpentry trade, including the Safety Orders of the Division of Industrial Safety for the State of California and California State Building Codes.
  • Ability to build, install and repair structural woodwork, flooring, ceilings and cabinetry.
  • Thorough knowledge of how to operate and maintain hand and power carpentry tools necessary to perform skilled carpentry work.
  • Ability to recognize and select appropriate lumber types and grades.

Education and Experience

  • Any combination of progressively responsible training and experience that demonstrates achievement of journey-level skills equivalent to that acquired through the completion of a carpenter’s apprenticeship program.  One to two years of experience as a journey-level carpenter that included work coordination responsibilities.

Salary and Benefits

Anticipated Hiring Range: $75,000 - $88,140 per year

Classification Range: $73,812 - $95,304 per year
