Position Description

Job Summary

Under limited supervision, this position develops and maintains enterprise-level information security services and operations for the campus. Primary activities include development of information security services; configuration of security monitoring; leads vulnerability scanning and analysis; principal information security incident management/responder/investigator; conduct risk assessments utilizing full-suite of security tools; and guide functional and technical staff toward security solutions by identifying and documenting security requirements.

The Senior Security Operations Engineer will require ongoing access to highly confidential data such as campus email content, HR, AP, UPD, Payroll, Health Center, and Presidential workstations, file shares, and encrypted data sets in order to assist the Information Security Officer in investigations and secure operations as needed.  In addition, this position plays a critical role in assisting management in the preparation of reports for management in support of labor disputes, bargaining issues, litigation, Title IX investigations, criminal activity, and Public Records Access Requests.

This position is eligible for remote work pursuant to Cal Poly’s Telecommuting and Remote Work Guidelines and the CSU policy requiring that all work be performed within the State of California.

Department Summary

Key Qualifications

  • Strong ability to apply campus information security policy and standards to develop specific security requirements. Ability to apply security models and frameworks (e.g. NIST) to ensure appropriate security is maintained.
  • Extensive knowledge of managing and responding to a security incident and leading forensic efforts.
  • Expert ability to design vulnerability scans in complex enterprise networks and provide remediation alternatives.
  • Advanced experience assessing security risks against established standards and evaluating effectiveness of controls.
  • Solid experience identifying emerging vulnerabilities and evaluating associated risks and threats.

Education and Experience

  • Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university and five years of progressively responsible experience in computer programming and software development, information processing, systems analysis, technical information equipment and systems, and/or application program packages and related technical functions. A graduate degree in a related field may be substituted for one year of the required experience. Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.

Salary and Benefits

Anticipated Hiring Range: $100,000 - $135,000 Per Year

Classification Range: $56,700 - $163,740 Per Year
