Salary and Benefits

The starting salary placement depends on qualifications and experience and is anticipated to be in the range of $4,500.00/month to $5,500.00/month.

About the Position

The incumbent is responsible for varying levels of installation, maintenance, project coordination and oversight involving the campus voice, data and video physical cable plant infrastructure (copper wire, fiber cable).  The incumbent is also responsible for updating documentation of all cable and communications equipment. These systems include: VOIP telephones, data network switches, routers and wireless access points, local and wide area networks. The incumbent will also provide project coordination with outside vendors and other campus departments.

Responsibilities

Infrastructure Improvements:

  • Plan, coordinate and install requested telecommunications improvements.
  • Coordinate all needed work with Facilities Management and ITS technical staff.
  • Terminate and install copper and fiber optic cabling.

Voice, Data, Audio Video and Network Infrastructure Troubleshooting and Repair:

  • Physically install network equipment including but not limited to data switches and WAPs.
  • Troubleshoot and repair voice, data and video wire and cable problems. Cable types including but not limited to SM - MM Fiber, Cat5E, Cat6, Cat6A, Both ISP and OSP.
  • Perform moves, adds and changes to campus cabling infrastructure.
  • Perform network activations throughout campus.
  • Maintain repair shop facilities, inventories, repair/maintenance logs, work order database, and equipment technical manuals.
  • Perform audio video equipment and system setup, installation, and interconnections.  Program video switchers, video and multimedia routers and configuration changes to application software. 

Documentation and Training

  • Acquire and/or prepare technical documentation for supported AV applications and Network Cabling Infrastructure.
  • Provide AV training and communication materials to users that maximize their ability to utilize AV resources.

Minimum Qualifications

  • An associate of arts degree in electronic, telecommunications, or industry technology, or equivalent education, training, and/or directly related experience.
  • Knowledge of electronic (digital or analog) theories, mechanical design, and understanding of the operation and use of the equipment utilized.

Required Qualifications

  • Ability to develop plans, specifications, work on a schedule and monitor progress against defined parameters.
  • Knowledge and ability to read and understand architectural blueprints, electrical and electronics schematics and equipment manuals.
  • Knowledge of the current practices of terminating category 5E/6 wire.
  • Knowledge of the necessary and best components, best layout, mounting etc., of equipment, including but not limited to, extension of electrical power, splicing coaxial, twisted pair, and fiber optic cable; termination of multi pair cable; proper connections of the above into existing networks on campus using specialized tools and test equipment.
  • Must be knowledgeable in proper ground and bonding practices for communications wiring.
  • Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the telecommunications network industry, including electrical codes, and the operation of equipment used in installation, fabrications, maintenance of communications systems and related equipment.
  • Must be familiar with the use of current test equipment for testing and certifying the same. Comprehensive knowledge and skills with installation of vertical riser systems in buildings and horizontal distribution of voice, data and video cable.
  • A valid California Driver’s License.

Preferred Skills and Knowledge

  • 2 years of equivalent trade school education or apprentice training.
  • BICSI Installer Certification.

Specific physical and/or environmental working conditions that relate to the essential requirements of the position

  • Walking/driving throughout the campuses carrying tools and equipment for normal and emergency troubleshooting, maintenance and repairs.
  • Able to read the color code on cables and designing strips.
  • Frequently communicating in person, by email and by telephone with the general public.
  • Working in a busy environment on both normal and emergency tasks.
  • Working with a computer keyboard to enter and retrieve information and to update databases.
  • Safely driving a State Vehicle.
  • Lifting equipment up to 75 lbs and moving heavier equipment.
  • Climbing ladders to access ceiling spaces and utility vaults.
  • Must be able to work in confined spaces such as crawl spaces and manholes.

Condition(s) of Employment

Satisfactory completion of a background check (including LiveScan, as appropriate), that may include, but is not limited to: criminal records check, verification of academic credentials, licenses, certificates, credit history, professional references and/or verification of work history is required for employment.  Cal State East Bay will issue a conditional offer of employment to the selected candidate, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Unsatisfactory results may also affect the continued employment of current Cal State East Bay employees who were conditionally offered the position.

All background checks are conducted through the university's third party vendor, Accurate. LiveScan is conducted through the University Police Department.
