The Department of Mathematics at California State University, Fullerton, invites applications for a tenure-track position in Mathematics Education at the Assistant Professor level with appointment to begin in August 2021. Directly supporting CSUF’s mission to educate our diverse and dynamic student body, the majority of whom are students of color and the first in their family to earn a college degree, this search is part of a cohort hire of five tenure-track faculty members across the departments of African American Studies, Chicana/Chicano Studies, Asian American Studies, Theatre and Dance, and Mathematics whose teaching and research supports campus progress towards an anti-racist, inclusive and socially-just future. We anticipate that several additional faculty hired in the 20-21 academic year will choose to join this cohort. Academic Affairs and Human Resources, Diversity, and Inclusion will support these new faculty with mentorship designed to sustain and advance their teaching and scholarly or creative activity success and to create a secondary community to complement that of their home department.
Candidates for this position should be mathematics educators with a strong mathematics background or mathematicians with a strong interest and experience in mathematics education. Candidates should also have expertise in equitable teaching practices in mathematics.
- Teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in mathematics and mathematics education, including graduate teacher-oriented courses in the general areas of algebra, analysis, problem-solving, and/or geometry with topics related to diversity, equity, and inclusion in both face-to-face and virtual settings.
- Being active in research related to the teaching and learning of mathematics, with particular emphasis in issues related to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
- Advising students in the teaching options of the undergraduate and graduate degree programs.
This position offers a number of exciting opportunities to collaborate with elementary, middle school, and high school teachers, CSUF College of Education faculty members, community college instructors, and mathematicians on a variety of teaching, research, and grant-funded projects. The successful candidate will contribute to the mathematics community at CSUF through teaching, research, professional activities, and service on departmental and university-wide committees and as part of the cohort of cluster hires.
The successful candidate must:
- Have a Ph.D. in a field directly related to Mathematics Education, and a master’s degree (or substantial graduate coursework and bachelor’s degree) in Mathematics; or a Ph.D. in Mathematics with demonstrated experience and expertise in Mathematics Education. All degree requirements must be completed prior to the starting date.
- Be able to contribute to the graduate teaching math program in the general areas of algebra, analysis, problem-solving, and/or geometry and incorporate topics related to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
- Have a well-defined research agenda that informs and supports equitable and inclusive teaching practices in mathematics with a clear vision of current and future work.
- Have a demonstrated commitment to teaching and mentoring students of diverse ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds, as well as the ability to communicate effectively with a culturally diverse campus community.
- Demonstrated excellence in teaching at the undergraduate and master’s levels.
- Interest in collaborating and contributing to the mathematics community at CSUF through research and professional activities, such as DEI-focused workshops as well as service on departmental and university-wide committees.
- A successful record of obtaining external funding.
- Teaching expertise in online/virtual environments.

Mathematics Education at CSU Fullerton
The Mathematics Department currently has seven full-time tenured or tenure-track faculty members in the area of Mathematics Education. Research areas of the Mathematics Education group include advanced mathematical thinking, problem posing and problem solving, mathematical modeling, professional development, and access and equity issues in mathematics. The Mathematics Education group is involved in a number of nationally funded projects, having received more than twenty million dollars in funding over the past ten years including partnerships with local school districts and community colleges that serve a majority Latinx student population. Virtually every high school in Orange County has at least one mathematics faculty member who is a CSUF alumnus. Many graduates from the Master’s Program in Teaching Mathematics have gone on to become mathematics professors at community colleges in southern California and beyond. In addition, a number of our master’s graduates have gone to earn their doctorates in mathematics education.
The Mathematics Department
The Mathematics Department has 35 tenured or tenure-track faculty members and offers an undergraduate degree program with concentrations in Teaching Mathematics, Statistics, Actuarial Science, Pure Mathematics, and Applied Mathematics. The department also offers the following graduate degree programs: M.A. in Teaching Mathematics, M.A. in Applied Mathematics, and M.S. in Statistics. Extra-curricular activity is an integral part of our department culture. We maintain a strong student research presence at the Joint Mathematics Meetings and our Putnam Team regularly scores in the top quartile. We are considered a leader in cutting edge and inclusive pedagogical practices. Our faculty often pursue and are awarded grants to fund efforts to support our students.
