Under the general direction of the Associate Provost for Student Success and Dean of University College, the Director of Tutoring Services plans, develops and evaluates the effectiveness of tutoring and tutoring-related efforts, manages the daily operations of the Cooperative Learning Center, works with IT and SIS to develop and provide necessary software and hardware, manages the budget and grant funded activities, coordinates Cooperative Learning Center outreach efforts, and coordinates the new tutor training program.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Provides core leadership for the Cooperative Learning Center and tutoring programming, including Supplemental Instruction, embedded tutoring, online tutoring and other peer-to-peer and professional staff led programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
- Manages the daily operations of the Cooperative Learning Center and other offsite and campus tutoring locations. Hires, trains, supervises and evaluates center staff, tutor area coordinators and student assistants. Provides mentoring and career development when possible.
- Conducts long range planning of work including recommending changes in practices and procedures impacting the tutoring center. Develops program evaluation and assessment tools. Identifies resources needed and develops budget requests. Manages Center budget, including Center policies and procedures, grant-related activities, etc.
- Develops and maintains regular and ad-hoc reports to monitor the effectiveness of tutoring efforts and to provide critical data and information to other campus departments. Consults with academic units and student support units to determine tutoring support needed across the curriculum. Collaborates with units across campus to develop and provide effective tutoring services.
- Develops appropriate strategies, messaging and campaigns to reach target audiences. Effectively markets tutoring services. Directs creation of internal distribution materials and coordinates classroom informational presentations as requested by faculty. Develops materials for College, department meetings and new faculty orientations. Distributes information to appropriate staff and departments.
- Coordinates Center outreach efforts with campus programs and fosters relationships for collaboration with cross-campus partners.
- Coordinates New Tutor Training Program for all tutors. Coordinates continuing Tutor Training Program Certification and Recertification.
- Serves on university committees as needed.
Performs other job-related duties and special projects as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of: student academic support literature, innovative approaches to academic support, and current issues facing academic support programs; life experiences, strengths/assets, and educational background of students from historically under-served populations; best practices in higher education, which focus on student learning outcomes and learning assessment; sound personnel practices and procedures; and operational and fiscal analysis and techniques.
Ability to: work collaboratively and effectively across disciplinary boundaries with faculty, students and staff; work with and respond to the needs of students and faculty from a variety of academic disciplines and diverse cultures; and plan, organize, and direct others in the formation of program and policy in the operation of the various activities of Tutoring Services and the Cooperative Learning Center. Demonstrated ability to provide leadership, management and facilitation skills; and the ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university AND a minimum of three years in a coordinating/management position in a student academic support unit.
Direct experience working with populations that have been historically under-served in education, preferably in English as a Second Language and first-generation college students. English/Spanish skills. Substantial experience in budget management. Experience leading or participating in the successful development of external funding. Experience working with technology-mediated instruction. Technical fluency with Oracle/PeopleSoft, CSU Common Management System or equivalent student information system; Microsoft Office Professional Suite, and Google mail and calendaring programs.

This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority (CSA) and will be required to participate in annual training and to immediately forward to the Clery Director all reports of crimes brought to their attention pursuant to the Clery Act and California State Education Code, Chapter 16, of the Donahue Higher Education Act, Section 67380.
Must be able to work a varied schedule including occasional evenings and weekends.
Office environment with standard equipment and tasks. The position requires working at a computer and desk for extended periods of time. May require travel between campus offices and off-campus locations.
