California State University, Monterey Bay (CSUMB) invites nominations and applications for the position of Assistant Professor in Human Development and Family Science who will primarily contribute to teaching and research in Family Science. The position is a full-time, academic year, 9-month, tenure-track appointment.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Design and teach courses leading to a bachelor’s degree in Human Development and Family Science
  • Design and teach courses offered by the Human Development and Family Science program as part of General Education, First Year Seminar, and other University Requirements
  • Participate in the development of an outcomes-based curriculum
  • Support hybrid/online approaches to curriculum design and instruction
  • Supervise, mentor, and advise undergraduate students
  • Engage in scholarly activities leading to publication
  • Seek grants or other sources of funding to support innovative inquiry-based projects
  • Participate in department, college, university, and community service
  • Contribute to the department's and university's efforts to create a welcoming, inclusive, and equitable learning environment for all students

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Ph.D. in Human Development, Family Science/Studies, Developmental Psychology, Sociology, or a related field
  • ABD will be considered if degree is conferred by the first day of employment
  • Demonstrated ability of effective teaching of undergraduate courses in Human Development and Family Science
  • Record of or demonstrated potential for successful research and publication
  • Strong background in family science theory and research
  • Demonstrated commitment to working with a diverse student population and in diverse communities
  • Demonstrated commitment to promoting diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice in higher education

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Teaching

  • Experience in developing and implementing culturally responsive pedagogy and inclusive teaching practices employing active and engaged learning techniques
  • Demonstrated ability to teach undergraduate courses across the human development and family science curriculum, with a focus on teaching Diverse Families, Immigrant Families, Parenting across the Lifespan, Risk and Resiliency in Families, and Addiction and Recovery in Families 
  • Demonstrated ability to teach core Human Development and Family Science courses, such as writing in the discipline, research methodology, professional development, service learning, and capstone courses

Research

  • Research activity on families and/or parenting, with a particular interest in diverse family structures, underrepresented populations, and intersectional approaches to family studies
  • Demonstrated ability and commitment to mentor students in research and in applied research settings
  • Ability to conduct research leading to publication in areas relevant to the department, college, and university’s mission
  • Experience with or potential to write and/or administer grants

Service

  • Interest in collaborations and outreach with local community organizations, social services, and educational institutions for individuals and families
  • Experience working in diverse, multilingual communities such as those that comprise the Monterey Bay and tri-county region
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor and support students from diverse backgrounds, including first-generation college students, students of color, LGBTQ+2S students, and students with disabilities
  • Commitment to working within an interdisciplinary department and college
  • Evidence of or potential for department, college, university, and community service and leadership

The Human Development and Family Science Department within the College of Education serves approximately 200 majors. The curriculum focuses on human growth and development across the lifespan from conception to death within the context of families.  Emphasis is placed on understanding the diversity of human development and applied learning. The faculty of the Department are expert scholars in their fields, bringing real-life experiences and outstanding teaching to students’ learning experiences.

COMPENSATION:

Anticipated Hiring Salary Range:  $7,166 to $7,481* mo. ($85,992 to $89,772 annual)

*CSUMB provides pay scales representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for this position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, and CSU systemwide pay for comparable jobs.
