PURPOSE:
Under the general supervision of the Director of Care and Basic Needs and as a staff member of the Office of Student Life, the Care Coordinator performs highly complex case management duties such as direct student support, risk assessment, internal/external referrals, outreach, training, education and documentation to assist individual students. The Care Coordinator responds to students who may be experiencing varying degrees of care and/or distress, including mental health issues, food insecurity/hunger, housing insecurity/homelessness, and other unforeseen circumstances that may be impacting their ability to be successful as a student. The incumbent is responsible for the supervision of Masters of Social Work and undergraduate Collaborative Health and Human Services student interns and for supporting the Basic Needs Hub Coordinator with managing, maintaining and expanding the services and programs of Basic Needs.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Direct Student Care Coordination
- Supports the Director of Care and Basic Needs with the direct care coordination tasks and operations.
- Conducts 1:1 care coordination counseling and intake with students to support student success holistically, including discussions around housing insecurity and safety, and providing referrals to on and off campus partners and advocacy. Ensures students are equipped for long-term success by enhancing healthy living practices through the eight dimensions of wellness; emotional, environmental, financial, intellectual, occupational, physical, social, and spiritual.
- Responsible for assigning less complex care coordination intakes to MSW student interns to assess support needs of students experiencing specific care issues.
- Completes daily coordination using documentation software to maintain the intake process, track the utilization of resources/ referrals, and anticipate the needs of targeted populations.
- Leads Weekly Care Team Case Review meeting in the absence of the Director of Care and Basic Needs.
- Co-facilitates monthly check-ins with the Director of Care and Basic Needs, in partnership with College Support Programs, Athletics, Affinity Spaces and support services. Cultivates an inclusive and engaged community to better support the individual needs of CSUMB’s diverse student body and promote long-term success.
- Financial Care Coordination and Advising
- Implements Care Coordinator intern onboarding, and professional development including recruitment, training, scheduling, weekly staff meetings and annual evaluations of student interns.
- Provide weekly task supervision and guidance to all MSW and CHHS student interns, including professional development, capstone ideation, and career exploration. Fosters student roles to expand experiential learning opportunities, research, and to benefit the university community.
- Review all social media posts and outward facing marketing materials for Care in collaboration with the Director of Care and Basic Needs.
- Works independently on day-to-day tasks to coordinate student centered programming, improve student experience and provide a robust array of services to student needs that align with the mission of the university and CSU system.
- Financial Literacy Program Outreach
- Participate in meetings, events, training, and committees related to financial literacy and care coordination.
- Develop financial literacy content targeted for specific student populations (First Year Students, Transfer Students, First Generation, etc…) to showcase during new student orientations, first year seminar classes, and upper division courses. Collaborate with affinity centers to develop content that is culturally relevant and economically just.
- Serve in CSU Workgroup roles including but not limited to Co-Chair for Financial Aid and Emergency Grants.
- Liaison with Financial Aid to receive updated information, training to better anticipate and respond to students’ financial concerns and long-term success.
- Liaison with Financial Aid and Student Receivables to develop financial care strategies for students with significant financial needs including students with enrollment holds, large past due balances, recurring emergency needs
- Stay up to date on Federal and State level policies which influence student’s socioeconomic wellbeing to better anticipate and respond to students’ financial concerns and financial wellbeing.
- Liaison with other CSU emergency grant and financial literacy providers to develop and implement new initiatives to CSUMB students, promoting institutional initiative as a leader in financial wellbeing.
- Program Evaluation and Development
- Supporting the Basic Needs Hub Coordinator with assessment tools to better understand student satisfaction and to measure food security levels among frequent visitors and to proactively engage students with high need to create individual care plans.
- Influence long term and short term goals and strategies, annual legislative reports, and monthly departmental updates, promoting institutional distinction.
- Synthesize Care metrics into a monthly report to provide to the Director of Care and Basic Needs and the Dean of Students to continuously refine the program and resources available
- Reconciles monthly expenditures to properly anticipate and respond to actual expenses and study/ staff salaries, ensuring long-term sustainability and enhancing financial health of the department.
Other Functions:

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Thorough knowledge of the policies, procedures and practices of the program area to which assigned or the ability to quickly acquire such knowledge. General knowledge of the policies, practices and activities of Student Services programs outside the program to which immediately assigned; general knowledge of the principles, problems and methods of public administration, including organizational, personnel and fiscal management; general knowledge of advanced statistical and research methods.
Ability to carry out very complex assignments without detailed instructions; advise students individually or in groups on varied and complex matters; determine the appropriate course of action and proper techniques to utilize while engaged with individuals and groups in personal interactions of a sensitive nature; reason logically and analyze and solve organizational and operating problems of one or several program areas; plan, coordinate and initiate actions necessary to implement administrative or group decisions or recommendations; analyze and define complex organizational, or procedural problems, collect and evaluate data, draw valid conclusions and project consequences of various alternative courses of action; understand the roles and responsibilities of others and to gauge relationships accordingly by taking into account the variety of the interrelationships, motivations and goals of the members of the organization served; and establish and maintain effective, cooperative and harmonious working relationships in circumstances which involve the denial of requests or the necessity to persuade others to accept a different point of view.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field, including or supplemented by upper division or graduate coursework in counseling techniques, interviewing, and conflict resolution where such are job-related.
Experience: Possession of these knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent to four years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience which includes experience in advising students individually and in groups, and in analysis and resolution of complex student services problems.
A master’s degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work or a job‑related field may be substituted for one year of professional experience. A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling, guidance or a job‑related field may be substituted for two years of the required professional experience for positions with a major responsibility for professional, personal or career counseling.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Master’s Degree preferred in areas such as Social Work, Counselling, Advising or Administration in Higher Education. Experience supporting students in higher education in roles such as academic or student success advising, mental health or financial counseling, Basic Needs case management. Prior knowledge/experience related to Social Service Systems, Financial Literacy, Early Alerts management, crisis intervention and case management. Experience with EAB Navigate and Maxient
Technical fluency with Oracle/PeopleSoft, CSU Common Management System or equivalent <student/finance> information system; Microsoft Office Professional; Google Workspace (Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Drive, Calendar, Forms, etc.); 25Live; intranet drives; and internet browsers.

PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT:
Office environment with standard equipment and tasks. The position requires working at a computer and desk for extended periods of time. May require travel between campus offices and off-campus locations.
