We are looking for a dedicated Administrative Support Coordinator to join our dynamic Department of Africana Studies. In this role, you will be the backbone of our one-person office, providing essential support to our esteemed faculty and ensuring smooth day-to-day operations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Budget and Fiscal Management: Assist with managing the department’s budget and financial matters.
  • Course Scheduling: Coordinate and schedule courses to meet the needs of our students and faculty.
  • Faculty Support: Assist with the faculty RTP process and handle paperwork for faculty appointments.
  • Policy Interpretation: Interpret and apply academic and administrative regulations and policies.
  • Data Management: Gather and analyze data to support departmental initiatives.
  • Committee Assistance: Provide support to various departmental committees.
  • Student Employee Supervision: Hire, train, and supervise student employees.
  • Website Oversight: Oversee updates and maintenance of the department’s website.
  • Event Planning: Organize and manage departmental events and activities.

Position Information

  • Full-time, permanent/probationary, role offering comprehensive benefits.
  • This position is designated non-exempt under FLSA and is eligible for overtime compensation.
  • Standard work hours are Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.
  • The individual hired into this role will work on campus at SDSU in San Diego.

Department Summary

The Department of Africana Studies has eight permanent faculty and 17 temporary lecturers. Africana Studies offers a broad, interdisciplinary program. The curriculum covers a variety of subjects pertaining to Africa and the African Diaspora.

The major establishes a strong academic foundation that can lead directly into a career or into graduate study in a variety of fields. It also creates linkages between the university community and the broader community by developing frameworks for social change. In short, the major seeks to provide a well-rounded educational experience. Degrees and Certificates offered by the Department include a BA in Africana Studies, a Minor in Africana Studies, and an Interdisciplinary Minor in African Studies.

Education and Experience

Entry to this classification requires a fully functional knowledge of and skill in standard office procedures and practices, as well as an ability to understand and operate in a variety of organizational structures. Additionally, incumbents are expected to have a thorough knowledge of English grammar, spelling, and punctuation and be able to clearly communicate orally and in writing. Some positions may require a knowledge of business mathematics beyond basic arithmetic. The ability to use and quickly learn new office support technology systems and software packages is also a prerequisite. 

These qualifications would normally be obtained through a high school program, technical/vocational program, or their equivalents combined with several years of related office work experience.

  • Experience with event planning and coordination.
  • Strong organizational skills and coordinating schedules.

Compensation and Benefits

Starting salary upon appointment is not expected to exceed $3,864 per month. 

Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department’s fiscal resources.

CSU Classification Salary Range: $ 3,864  - $6,072 per month.
