The position is in the Department of American Indian Studies in the College of Ethnic Studies at San Francisco State University. The department was created in 1969 along with the College. The mission of the department is to educate, inspire, and prepare students for engaged careers and/or graduate school and to be an educational hub and site for community participation and learning focused on the Indigenous peoples of the northern Americas.

We are looking for someone who can complement existing strengths in anthropology, history, music, law, and gender/sexuality studies. We are especially interested in someone with research, publishing, and teaching expertise in climate/environmental justice, public health, or literatures including speculative fiction. A sub-area of specialization in Native California would be of special interest.

Responsibilities: The position requires graduate and undergraduate teaching, mentoring and advising graduate and undergraduate students, maintaining an active record of research, publication, and/or creative work in one’s area of specialty, and ongoing committee and service assignments. • A Ph.D., M.F.A, or equivalent terminal degree in American Indian Studies or a relevant discipline from an accredited program.
• Degree must be completed by the first day of employment.


  • Record of research and work in climate/environmental studies, literature, or the arts;
  • Experience teaching and working closely with students from historically under-represented communities;
  • Record of contributing to supportive and collaborative work environments
