The Physical Therapy program at San Francisco State University seeks applicants for its part-time lecture faculty pool.

We desire a team-oriented colleague with previous experience teaching in a DPT program who is willing and able to collaborate on innovative instructional methods, student-learning activities, and scholarly pursuits. We are also eager to identify candidates who show a genuine appreciation of evidence-based teaching, integrating technology within the classroom, and building a student-centered community.  

The three-year entry level Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) program is offered jointly with the University of California, San Francisco. The DPT program is designed to prepare scholarly clinicians, educators, collaborative clinical researchers, administrative managers and community leaders

The curriculum is built on a strong theoretical foundation in basic, medical, and applied sciences. Critical thinking and clinical reasoning skills are developed within an integrated program that prepares students to work collaboratively with patients across the lifespan to improve health and wellness, address disability challenges, and optimize function.

The University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) and San Francisco State University (SFSU) are both accredited by Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC).  The Joint Doctor of Physical Therapy Program between UCSF and SFSU is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE).

This is a CONTINUOUS recruitment for an applicant POOL to fill part-time, temporary, assignments on an as-needed basis, beginning Fall 2022 & Spring 2023. The start and end dates of the semester can be found at the following link:

We will refer to the POOL of applications on file to fill assignments as the need arises. Part-time faculty applications are accepted year-round. You will be contacted should the program be interested in scheduling an interview. Select candidates may also be invited to give a presentation.

  • Provide high quality and timely instruction in assigned courses both online and in-person.
  • Maintain contemporary knowledge and clinical expertise in physical therapy.
  • Collaborate with colleagues in the physical therapy department and throughout the university.
  • Adapt and align course materials using departmental syllabus templates, required text(s), and other resources.
  • Provide regular and timely feedback on student work.
  • Maintain regular communication with students through virtual office hours and e-mail.
  • Maintain clear, consistent records in iLearn (Moodle)
  • Participate in department-wide assessments.
  • Respond to student and peer evaluation
  • Participate in professional development


  • Doctorate of Physical Therapy Degree from a CAPTE accredited program and a USDE regionally accredited institution of higher education.
  • Active state licensure for practicing physical therapy and eligibility for licensure in CA.
  • Contemporary expertise in physical therapy practice.
  • Experience teaching concepts of physical therapy practice in a clinical and/or academic setting.
  • Ability to use online instructional technologies and to travel to the university for face-to-face teaching in lecture and lab activities is required.
  • The ideal candidate should possess strong organizational, communication, decision-making, teamwork, interpersonal, technological, and leadership skills, and be engaged in professional development that will facilitate continued excellence in our DPT program.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • An earned ABPTS board certification or other advanced practice certifications
  • Experience with a variety of pedagogical and technological educational delivery methods in physical therapy.
  • Membership in the American Physical Therapy Association.
  • Demonstrate effectiveness in teaching and student evaluation.

Current Teaching Opportunities: 

Graduate courses in one of the DPT emphasis or content areas:

  • Orthopedic physical therapy
  • Neurological physical therapy
  • Acute care physical therapy
  • Pediatric physical therapy
  • Professionalism issues, including ethics, healthcare policy and administration
  • Health promotion and wellness
  • Functional kinesiological concepts in physical therapy
  • Other courses, as program needs develop

The mode of instruction is determined by the department to align with student and program needs. Instructors should be flexible teaching online or in person according to university guidelines and policies.
