The Department of Computer Science at SJSU offers BS degree in Computer Science, and in Software Engineering (jointly with Dept. of Computer Eng.). We also offer MS degree in Computer Science, in Bioinformatics, and in Data Science (jointly with Dept. of Math/Stats).
Brief Description of Duties
We invite applications for a pool of part-time lecturers, should an opening arise, to teach undergraduate and graduate courses. The number of positions varies from semester to semester, depending on the needs of the Department. The pool will remain in place for two calendar years; those interested in remaining in the pool beyond that time must reapply. We are seeking outstanding lecturers who can teach small to large lecture courses. Excellence in teaching is expected, plus filling all the responsibilities associated with the assigned course, including: conducting designated class meetings and weekly office hour, giving and evaluating student work including exams and homework assignments. Positions start at the beginning of a semester and appointments may be renewed based on department need, funding, and performance.
Candidate must demonstrate awareness and experience understanding the needs of a student population of great diversity – in age, cultural background, ethnicity, primary language and academic preparation – through inclusive course materials, teaching strategies and advisement.
All Faculty should be organizing their classes within the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS), the official LMS provided for the SJSU community. All classes at SJSU, whether online or not, must be anchored in the Canvas platform to ensure faculty-student connection in a common space as all students are directed to log in to Canvas for online access to their classes. You will have access to this system prior to the semester start date.
- Ph.D. in Computer Science, Bioinformatics, or a related discipline, and teaching experience at the undergraduate level; MS with extensive industry experience and teaching experience at the undergraduate level. BS with extensive industry experience and teaching experience at the undergraduate level may be considered for lower-division courses.
- Applicants should demonstrate an awareness of and sensitivity to the educational goals of a multicultural population as might have been gained in cross-cultural study, training, teaching and other comparable experience.
Preference will be given to candidates with teaching, research, and/or industry experience in the following areas: Programming Language Paradigms, Computer Networks, Computer Architectures, Database Management Systems, Mobile Computing, Distributed and Cloud Computing, Machine Learning, and Artificial Intelligence.
Please be advised that an appointment is contingent upon budget and enrollment considerations and subject to order of assignment provisions in the collective bargaining agreement between California State University and California Faculty Association. These provisions state the “Order of Work,” or the order in which available courses must be assigned to faculty, starting with tenure line faculty and ending with new lecturer appointees.
Salary Range - To commensurate with experience.
