Materials Engineer - Electrical Specific

Purpose of the role is to… • Be the technical specialist and primary point of contact for materials engineering related to our electronic systems including high power switching devices, complex PCB’s and their associated IC devices, and be an expert in the related joining methods and techniques. • Lead forensic investigation into failed electronic components to establish the root cause and to develop and propose robust solutions. • Research and develop new materials and processes that will add reliable performance to the Electronics within the Power Unit. • Work with cross functional teams to provide expert advice to our Engineering and Operations functions for electronic material selection and production techniques. • Creation of process control documentation relating to your specialist area, including the selection and auditing of suitable suppliers. (Travel may be required) • Ensure the integrity of material test data made available for design and simulation.

Be skilled at…

  • Preparing, testing and analysing samples, using lab equipment including SEM and optical microscopes.
  • Forensic level failure investigation where evidence is often partially destroyed
  • Writing quality reports and technical specifications to communicate clearly with all stakeholders

Have experience of…

  • Power modules and electronic devices at component level.
  • Conducting research and development projects.
  • Component failure analysis including electronics fault finding to component level.
  • Providing proven solutions to problems under pressure.
  • Working with the supply chain on both development and control of processes.

Demonstrate knowledge of…

  • Welding (solid state and fusion), brazing, sintering and soldering.
  • A wide knowledge of engineering materials from a component usage perspective, along with production techniques for the materials.
  • The properties of a wide selection of metallic alloys, polymers/plastics and composite materials.
  • Materials characterisation techniques, particularly related to electronics.

Hold these qualifications…

  • Materials Degree with 2:1 classification or above and hold greater than 3 years’ experience in a similar job role.


  • Tenacious, curious and self-motivated
  • Familiar with hands-on failure investigations on a daily basis to deliver engineering direction.
  • A clear and concise communicator at all levels.
  • Experienced in technical leadership.
  • Methodical and rigorous with outstanding attention to detail.

Success in this role will be if you… (deliverables)

  • Failure Analysis: You will be responsible for leading hands-on forensic investigation into failed electronic components, often within short timescales, both to identify the root cause of the failure and recommend options to prevent future occurrence.
  • Materials Development: You will provide expert guidance to HPP’s engineers in both Engineering and Operations regarding material selection and production techniques, whilst also researching and developing new material options that offer a benefit to the Power Unit.
    • Provide advice and guidance to lead materials selection for metallic, plastic and composite materials, including coatings for electronic applications.
    • Support manufacturing and quality departments on material and process issues including liaison with and visiting external suppliers.
    • Produce and develop materials specifications and quality standards.
    • Provide advice on sourcing and selection of external suppliers.
    • Identify and conduct relevant research and development activities focussed on improving materials, processes and characterisation techniques to improve the Power Unit.
