Job Description
The Theatre Assistant is a key member of the production team responsible for the technical execution of theatre productions within PPSC’s performing arts program.
The assistant oversees and ensures the safe and efficient build of scenery, lighting, and other technical elements, while serving as a mentor and instructor to students engaged in technical theatre work. This position requires strong leadership, collaboration, and teaching skills, as well as expertise in lighting, sound, stagecraft, and shop management.
This position is temporary part-time, not to exceed 28 hours per week, maximum 9-month assignment.
Evening and weekend work required during production periods.
Minimum Qualifications
Completed Associate’s degree or high school diploma/GED.
Two years of professional or educational theatre technical experience.
Proficiency in lighting and sound systems, scenic design, and theatrical safety standards.
Experience with power tools, shop machinery, lighting consoles (ETC preferred), and sound equipment and systems.
Excellent organizational, leadership, and communication skills.
Demonstrated ability to mentor and teach students from diverse backgrounds.
Preferred Qualifications:
Three or more years of professional or educational theatre technical experience.

Duties & Responsibilities
Production Oversight and Execution
Oversee lighting installation for productions including hang, circuiting, focus, and programming.
Assist with sound and projection elements as needed.
Supervise the construction, installation, and strike of scenery and stage elements for all departmental productions.
Ensure all technical elements are completed safely, on time, and within budget.
Safety and Facilities Management
Maintain a safe, organized, and efficient scene shop, lighting and sound equipment, tool inventory, and theatre spaces.
Conduct regular inspections of facilities and tools; coordinate repairs and upgrades as necessary.
Enforce safety protocols in compliance with institutional policies.
Physical demands include lifting up to 20 pounds and ability to climb ladders.
Student Mentorship and Instruction
Instruct and mentor students in technical theatre practices including stage lighting, sound design, stage management, scenic construction, and shop safety.
Supervise student crews during lab hours, build sessions, and production runs.
Foster a collaborative, inclusive learning environment that supports student growth and creativity.
Collaboration and Communication
Collaborate closely with faculty directors, designers, stage managers, and staff to realize the artistic and pedagogical goals of each production.
Attend production meetings, design presentations, technical rehearsals, and strike.
Communicate clearly with all team members to ensure transparency, scheduling efficiency, and goal alignment.
Ability to work in a multi-cultural environment and supports diversity, and to work with people from a variety of backgrounds.
