Job Description

The communications specialist will be responsible for executing a comprehensive communications program for the Virginia Tech Mid-Atlantic Aviation Partnership (MAAP), with a significant percentage of effort dedicated to MAAP’s efforts under the Federal Aviation Administration’s BEYOND Program.
The communications specialist will work closely with department leadership to execute the center’s communication and outreach activities. This position will report to the associate director of the Virginia Tech Mid-Atlantic Aviation Partnership, with oversight from the director of communications for the Institute for Critical Technology and Applied Science.
This position will comprise functions including developing written content for press releases and other internal and external communications, producing marketing collateral, managing social media accounts, updating and maintaining the organization’s website, and preparing reports to sponsors and stakeholders; these tasks will be executed in accordance with university brand standards and organizational messaging.
This position will also handle outreach to external and community audiences, to include planning and participating in outreach events and research demonstrations (in live or virtual formats) and managing the creation and distribution of surveys and other feedback vehicles. The communications coordinator will work closely with industry and government sponsors and external partners to manage brand messaging and to promote positive public perception.
The ideal candidate is internally motivated, with the ability to work independently as well as part of a team; has a comprehensive skill set and a demonstrated track record of managing successful communications programs with a variety of stakeholders; is comfortable with communicating technical content; and can work fluidly across academic, commercial, and government environments. Finalists will be asked to produce writing samples as part of the interview process.
Position is expected to be integrated with the University’s Public Relations group.

About the Virginia Tech Mid-Atlantic Aviation Partnership
The Virginia Tech Mid-Atlantic Aviation Partnership (MAAP) enables safe, productive drone integration by identifying research-driven solutions to key challenges in the industry, successfully executing groundbreaking operations that propel the technology forward. MAAP manages one of seven FAA-designated UAS test sites and one of eight teams participating in the UAS BEYOND Program, working closely with both regulating authorities and commercial partners to inform evidence-based policies and standards.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, or a related field
• Experience preparing and executing effective marketing and communications campaigns with quantifiable outcomes.
• Demonstrated record of professional marketing and communications with the public through various forms of media and representing a broad constituency.
• Digital skills including but not limited to proficiency with website maintenance, content management systems, social media management, digital marketing, etc.
• Strong writing and editing skills

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in communications and outreach around emerging technologies.
• Demonstrated ability to work productively with a variety of stakeholders in academia, industry, and government.
• Knowledge of html and other web programming tools.
• Experience with photography and videography.
• Experience with graphic design and Adobe Creative Suite.
