Job Description

The Department of Psychology, College of Science, VIRGINIA TECH, invites applications for one Assistant or Associate tenured/tenure-track faculty position in Clinical Science to begin August 2021 in our nationally recognized (2017 ABCT Outstanding Training Program) and dually accredited (APA and PCSAS) doctoral program. Virginia Tech’s clinical science area emphasizes the integration of science and practice in research and training and highly values efficacy and effectiveness research, dissemination and implementation science, health improvement, and preventive intervention across the lifespan. In order to complement our existing strengths, we are especially interested in candidates with a translational program of research that focuses on sociocultural mechanisms of mental health, health disparities, intervention efficacy and effectiveness, transdiagnostic mechanisms, and/or dissemination and implementation in community and school settings. We seek clinical scientists with a successful track record in research, obtaining (or potential for obtaining) extramural funding, and teaching effectiveness. Candidates will be expected to conduct programmatic research, teach graduate and undergraduate courses, mentor undergraduate and doctoral students, supervise clinical practicum, and engage in department, college, and university-level service activities.

Content area is open, but we prioritize the use of scientifically informed methods to enhance mental and physical health, wellbeing, and healthy decisions through the interplay of research, intervention, and implementation across diverse and underserved populations. Our faculty have multiple interests including risk/resiliency and adaptation across contexts, decision making, developmental psychopathology, stress and coping, emotion regulation, and neuroscience perspectives cutting across conditions such as autism, anxiety, ADHD, PTSD, depression, obesity, and substance use.

As a hub discipline, research in the Clinical Science area aligns with several of the university’s Destination/Strategic Growth Areas (, most notably Adaptive Brain and Behavior across the Lifespan, Data and Decisions, Global Systems Science, Policy, and Equity and Social Disparity in the Human Condition. Consistent with Virginia Tech’s land grant mission, the Clinical Science area is dedicated to public health and service, which allows successful candidates to have potential collaborations across the university, including the Virginia Tech School of Medicine, the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute, School of Neuroscience, School of Public and International Affairs, Master of Public Health Program, and Center for Transformative Health Behavior, in addition to the program’s three training clinics: the Psychological Services Center, Child Study Center, and Autism Clinic/Center for Autism Research. Required Qualifications

Candidates must hold a doctorate in Psychology or allied discipline by the time of appointment, and must be licensed or license eligible in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Candidates will be expected to develop an innovative research program, evidenced by a record of high quality publications and external research support, combined with a strong commitment to undergraduate and graduate level teaching and mentorship.

Preferred Qualifications

Preference is for candidates with doctoral training in clinical psychology or clinical science. Candidates who can contribute to an overarching department initiative to enhance diversity and our understanding of diversity are particularly encouraged to apply.

Preference will be given to candidates who are licensed or license-eligible in the state of Virginia and/or who have expertise in advanced statistical modeling techniques (e.g., multilevel modeling, growth-mixture modeling).
