Job Description

The Wildlife Worker assists the Field Coordinator in monitoring the population of red-cockaded woodpeckers on Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, assisting base natural resource personnel in managing the woodpecker population, and carrying out research on the biology of the woodpeckers and other aspects of the longleaf pine ecosystem.

Required Qualifications

Bachelors degree in biology, wildlife biology or related field; ability to walk up to 6 miles per day and to climb up to 60 feet using Swedish ladders; ability to navigate through undeveloped forested habitat using GPS and maps; ability to operate 4-wheel drive vehicles; ability to interpret instructions and complete assignments independently or as part of a team; ability to operate power drills in order to construct artificial cavities for red-cockaded woodpeckers.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience working with red-cockaded woodpeckers; experience banding birds and reading color bands; experience identifying birds by sight and sound; experience constructing artificial cavities for red-cockaded woodpeckers; experience working on a military base.
