Job Description

Virginia Tech’s Department of Biological Systems Engineering invites applications for a tenure-track, research and extension faculty position (9-month appointment) in the field of Translational Biotechnology at the rank of Assistant Professor. We seek candidates who are motivated to contribute to a collegial, interdisciplinary community in several core mission areas of the university.

The Department is affiliated with two nationally-ranked colleges (College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and College of Engineering) and has 21 tenure-track faculty with a current enrollment of 140 undergraduate and 40 graduate students. Classroom and lab facilities are available on campus in Blacksburg, Virginia with additional research and extension assets located at the Agricultural Research and Extension centers in Virginia Beach, Hampton and other locations in Virginia.

This faculty position will be filled at Virginia Tech's main campus, located in Blacksburg, Virginia. Multidisciplinary collaborations are encouraged, with opportunities including other Virginia Tech departments, Fralin Biomedical Research Institute, Fralin Life Sciences Institute, and the Institute for Critical Technology and Applied Science. The main campus area includes Virginia Tech’s Corporate Research Center, home to several growing startup companies in the biotechnology field. The Institute for Advanced Learning and Research in Danville, Virginia (a 2-hour drive from campus) offers additional opportunities for industry collaborations.

The successful candidate will complement and strengthen BSE’s dynamic and expanding research programs in the Biotechnology/Bioprocessing area with potential focus areas that include, but are not limited to, agricultural biotechnology, biomanufacturing, biopharmaceuticals, renewable biochemicals, and/or biomaterials. The extension component of this position will include collaborating with industry partners to develop and deliver education and outreach programs that translate research advances in biotechnology into public and private sector impacts. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to initiate, build, and sustain an integrated and externally-funded research and extension program that leverages the existing strengths of BSE and Virginia Tech. The successful candidate will also contribute to a strong academic experience for students, to include providing undergraduate research opportunities and advising graduate students. The position will be officed in the recently-constructed, collaboration-friendly Human and Agricultural Biosciences Building 1 (HABB1) on the main campus of Virginia Tech. The successful candidate will have primary access to BSE’s 3,227 square foot pilot laboratory on the first floor of HABB1 to support collaborative program activities with recruited industry partners.

A Ph.D. in engineering or science with at least one degree in Biological Systems Engineering or a closely related discipline is required by appointment start date. The successful candidate will have a strong record of relevant research experience and academic accomplishment, a proven ability to work collaboratively, experience with and commitment to interdisciplinary research and outreach, and a willingness to expand disciplinary boundaries to address complex technical and societal challenges. Desirable qualifications include work experience and demonstrated collaborations with biotechnology, agricultural, chemical, and/or biomedical industry partners, experience in securing funding for program support, and capacity for obtaining registration as a Professional Engineer. Global engagement is important as the incumbent’s career advances, and will contribute to the expansion of Virginia Tech’s reputation in this domain. This position requires occasional travel for conferences and meetings. The successful candidate will be required to have a criminal conviction check as well as documentation of COVID-19 vaccination or receive approval from Virginia Tech for a vaccination exemption due to a medical condition or sincerely held religious belief.
