Job Description

The Virginia Tech Carilion (VTC) School of Medicine (VTCSOM) seeks an experienced, visionary leader for the position of Chair of the Department of Basic Science Education (DBSE). Reporting directly to the Dean of the VTCSOM, the Chair of DBSE will provide leadership, mentoring, and strategy for a department of approximately 13 core faculty and 40 affiliate faculty representing a spectrum of research and medical science specialties. The successful candidate will be a creative and collaborative leader with a demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion as a means of achieving institutional excellence. Minimum requirements include PhD, MD, or MD/PhD from an accredited institution; a distinguished record in medical education, research, and scholarship; and a record of successful leadership at the course or department level. The successful candidate will have outstanding communication skills, relationship experience in building productive and cohesive teams, and the ability to engage with a broad range of key stakeholders.

As chair of the DBSE, the successful candidate will set the standard for intellectual engagement and accomplishment for the department. The chair will provide strategic leadership and vision to achieve excellence in teaching, research and scholarship, and service. The chair will also be responsible for faculty development, recruitment and retention, budget development and administration, resource management, and the entrepreneurial development of new revenue streams. The chair will oversee all faculty activities and manage all academic initiatives of the department and has the authority to assign teaching, research, and service roles to the faculty of the department. The chair is responsible for assuring adequate faculty for the department's responsibilities to the educational and research missions of VTCSOM, either through supporting the educational and research activities of current faculty or recruitment of additional faculty with appropriate training, teaching skills, and experience. The VTCSOM Dean will work with the department chair to identify appropriate resources to support faculty recruitment. The Dean, VTCSOM Vice Dean, Senior/Associate/Assistant Deans, the Chief Diversity Officer, and Department Chairs comprise the leadership of the medical school. Regular meetings are held by this leadership group for both immediate concerns and collaborative planning.

This position will be located at VTCSOM (https://medicine.vtc.vt.edu/), on the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech) health sciences campus in Roanoke, Virginia. VTCSOM enrolled its first students in 2010 and became the ninth college of Virginia Tech in July 2018. The school received initial LCME accreditation in 2014, and re-accreditation in 2019 for a full 8-year term. In partnership with Carilion Clinic and the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute at VTC, VTCSOM is a cornerstone of one of the nation’s premier health and biomedical research ecosystems. Located in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains, and 40 miles from the Virginia Tech main campus in Blacksburg, VTCSOM provides abundant opportunities to deliver innovative, discovery-based medical education in a community-based and picturesque setting.

The mission of the Department of Basic Science Education is to develop an integrated medical experience using evidence-based delivery grounded in the science of learning. Members of the department excel in the design and delivery of advanced teaching and assessment methods to establish robust, state-of-the-art teaching practices. The goal is to establish the department as a center of excellence for the science of medical education, publishing research and establishing best practices for the benefit of our students and medical education at large.

Review of applications will begin immediately with a goal of having the new department chair in place no later than July 1, 2022.

Required Qualifications

PhD degree in a basic science or other relevant discipline, or an MD degree or equivalent, from an accredited institution.

Credentials meriting initial appointment at the rank of either associate or full professor

Administrative experience and evidence of leadership qualities.

A record of prior teaching and distinguished research accomplishments highlighted by publications in peer-reviewed journals.

Distinguished record in medical education, research, and scholarship

Experience in the science of medical education, and leading/mentoring faculty in medical education innovation or scholarship

A record of extramural funding

Demonstrated leadership and administrative experience

Evidence of innovative new program development

Knowledge of current trends and issues in academic medicine

Budgetary and financial management skills

Effective decision making, and capacity to advance strategic initiatives and achieve targeted goals

Commitment to excellence in teaching, research, and community engagement and service

Emotional intelligence, outstanding communication skills, and the ability to build strong interpersonal relationships

Commitment to integrity, transparency, and authenticity

Ability to build and sustain effective and diverse teams, including inter-professional and interdisciplinary

Commitment to diversity and inclusion as a means of achieving institutional excellence

Demonstrated mentorship of women and other groups often underrepresented in academic medicine

Ability to communicate effectively in a culturally and ethnically diverse community

Ability and commitment to collaboration and building effective partnerships within the university and surrounding community
