Advancement is seeking a passionate special events photographer/videographer to capture still images and video of the university’s most significant events. This position is a fun, fast paced, creative role where the ideal candidate will work across the Advancement division, collaborating with colleagues to make alumni and donors feel valued and engaged.
The photographer/videographer will provide visual coverage for important gatherings as well as create videos for some events. Visual coverage of events will include fundraisers, receptions, awards ceremonies, socials, reunions, etc. and imagery will be shared with attendees and/or be published in public relations or stewardship materials.
The events photographer/videographer will shoot, produce, and edit photos and videos on the university’s activities for external and internal audiences. The candidate must have excellent communications skills and be able to properly assess and meet a variety of needs.
Duties include capturing candid and staged moments and working hand in hand with event coordinators. The photographer/videographer will arrive before attendees to shoot the scene of gatherings, take images of people as they arrive, capture moments of guests enjoying receptions or dinners, and other shots as directed.
The ideal candidate will have professional experience as an events photographer and videographer or a similar role, working in a dynamic, high-energy events environment. The ideal candidate will have the ability to work independently, multitask, and work on multiple deadline-driven projects simultaneously. Deadlines will be fast. Work on nights and weekends, as well as travel is expected.
Experience with content management systems and digital asset management systems is preferred. The events photographer/videographer will upload visual content to websites and appropriately tag and upload images to the university’s photo library.
The ideal candidate will actively collaborate with colleagues on stewardship, marketing, and communications projects. They will also assist in photography and videography stewardship strategies and complete other duties as assigned.
The photographer/videographer reports to the director of Advancement communications. The team is located at Virginia Tech’s Blacksburg campus. The candidate’s efforts are focused on supporting Advancement and university-level priorities and meeting the needs of Advancement and university colleagues.
Bachelor's degree in video or file production, photography, visual communication, journalism, new media, fine arts or equivalent work and/or academic experience
Experience working independently, multitasking, and working on multiple deadline-driven projects simultaneously.
Fluency with using Canon or Nikon DSLRs to shoot images and video.
Portfolio that demonstrates deep knowledge of photography, videography and editing.
Demonstrated experience as an events photographer/videographer or a similar role or experience, working in a dynamic, high-energy events environment.
Regional and national travel required for the purposes of conducting field research, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship, which may include overnights and weekends.
Must have the ability and willingness to travel utilizing standard, commercial, and/or personal modes of transportation.
Ability to work nights and weekends, and participation in college or university programs when possible.
Candidates should submit a portfolio of their photography and videography work that illustrates their ability to be successful in the position.
Experience with content management systems and digital asset management systems.
Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite and Mac-based systems and software
Experience working in a higher education setting
