Medical Clerk & Insurance Assistant for the Sports Medicine unit within Virginia Tech Athletics, works with departmental medical providers and the insurance coordination team to provide medical care for student-athletes. Independently processes and inputs highly sensitive and confidential medical records, information and demographics into electronic medical records software in accordance with HIPAA and FERPA laws. Assists with front desk coverage and provides superior customer service and support for sports medicine staff, visitors, student-athletes and medical providers. Processes student athlete medical bills for payment and inputs billing records into insurance databases and charts. Works with staff, medical providers and insurance companies to resolve billing and payment issues. Other duties include invoice processing, scheduling and other administrative tasks as required by the Chief of Staff / Sports Medicine and the Associate Athletics Director / Sports Medicine.
Experience providing office support and customer service.
Previous data entry experience and comfortable working with computer software such as Microsoft Office and Google Workspace.
Previous experience working with extremely sensitive and confidential information.
Accuracy and attention to detail.
Ability to work independently with very little direction.
Commitment to diversity.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Knowledge of medical terminology, HIPAA and FERPA laws.
Previous experience working in an EMR (Electronic Medical Records) system.
Understanding of medical insurance billing process.
Experience processing medical bills and insurance paperwork.
Knowledge of University software such as HokieMart or Banner.
Experience working in sports medicine within a collegiate athletics program.
Comfortable taking basic vital signs on patients.
Commensurate with experience.
The successful candidate will be required to have a criminal conviction check.
