Job Description

The Virginia Tech National Security Institute is seeking an Associate Director for their Intelligent Systems Division. The Intelligent Systems Lab (ISD) is a fast-growing research division located primarily at the Virginia Tech Research Center in Arlington, VA. Based on the foundation of the Ted and Karyn Hume Center for National Security and Technology, Virginia Tech launched the Virginia Tech National Security Institute in September 2021. With a presence in Blacksburg and the Washington, D.C., metro area, the institute aspires to be the nation's preeminent academic organization at the nexus of interdisciplinary research, technology, policy, and talent development, the national security institute will advance national security in pursuit of a secure America.

The successful candidate for the ISD Associate Director position will help to expand the labs research portfolio in data science, machine learning, artificial intelligence, and cybersecurity; systems engineering for incorporating these technologies into complex systems; and the evaluation of technologies and systems. A successful candidate should have experience in the role of PI or Co-PI on research funded projects and an ability and willingness to work collaboratively with faculty from a variety of disciplines. The successful candidate will also proactively work to establish new relationships with other departments at Virginia Tech and collaborate on projects with those departments. The incumbent should have experience managing groups. This position will lead research groups that can include faculty, students, and staff. They will also assist the Director of ISD in leadership of the lab and help shape future strategic directions for the Lab
The Virginia Tech National Security Institute seeks to meet the pressing needs of the defense and intelligence communities by advancing interdisciplinary research, technology, policy and the development of specialized talent. ISD conducts research and education programs in support of this mission. Education programs engage undergraduates and graduate students through experiential learning, scholarships, internship, and career opportunities in the national security sector. Research programs support graduate assistantships through sponsored research with defense and intelligence organizations.

The Intelligent Systems Division leverages technologies within cyber-physical systems, data science, systems engineering, artificial intelligence, and machine learning to address critical areas of national security. With locations in Arlington and Blacksburg, ISD has proximity to work with federal government and private sector companies to accomplish their research in these national security focused areas and access to students in Blacksburg and Northern Virginia.

Required Qualifications

• An earned Ph.D. in Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Systems Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Psychology or a closely related field.
• demonstrated excellence in research or evidence of high potential for such excellence;
• prior experience in the role of PI or Co-PI on funded research projects ability to articulate a coherent agenda of research or scholarship and to identify potential funding sources to support such research activities;
• effective communication skills and previous supervisory experience
• Must be a US citizen.
• Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance.

Preferred Qualifications

• Active security clearance;
• Ability and willingness to work collaboratively with faculty from a variety of disciplines;
• Experience mentoring or working with students including overseeing student internships or service-learning activities;
• interest or experience working effectively with a diverse student population.
