Job Description

As a vital member of the VTCSOM finance team, this position reports directly to the Director of Finance with broad responsibilities for performing financial analysis/forecasting, reporting including preparation of finance/budget reports, and cost analysis/pricing/proposed fee structure for services performed for our partners, Carilion Clinic and Radford University. This position works with the Director of Finance to coordinate and supervise daily finance operations that include accounts payable/accounts receivables, fixed assets, foundation accounting as well as supervision of staff. The Assistant Director position is instrumental in ensuring fiscal and business compliance and maintaining internal controls in conformity with Virginia Tech, federal, state, and other required compliance standards.

The Assistant Director must be detail, action, solution, and results-oriented; have a passion for quality, data accuracy, and continuous improvement in operations; and have experience collaborating with stakeholders from all levels while maintaining discretion and confidentiality when needed. This position is expected to identify responsibilities independently while maintaining effective communication with the Director of Finance and self-awareness in meeting deadlines.

Required Qualifications

*Advanced degree in business administration, accounting, finance, or a related field(s) or a
Bachelor’s degree/equivalent education in accounting or related business field
* Significant experience in financial management and reporting (e.g., budgeting, accounting,
financial analysis, accounts payable/accounts receivables, report preparation, managing
finance operations).
*Previous supervisory/managerial experience.
*Proficiency in financial analytical tools and finance management systems/software ( e.g.
MicroStrategy and Banner).
*Experience with policies and procedures ensuring compliance, adequate internal controls, as
well as the security and integrity of data.
*Proficiency in working with computer applications such as Word, MS Teams, Google Sheets,
and Outlook, with advanced competency in Excel or similar spreadsheet software.
*Strong analytical skills, ability to perform research; proficiency in performing complex
calculations and account reconciliations, analyzing accounts, and creating reports based on
*Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work with diverse audiences;
along with strong presentation skills.
*High level of independent judgment, initiative, discretion, and problem-solving skills and the
ability to learn the software as needed; strong communication skills; able to work both
collaboratively and independently without constant supervision.

Preferred Qualifications

*Experience with financial, budget, procedures, and operational systems (e.g. such as Banner, Hokiemart, MicroStrategy)
*Experience in higher education, state or governmental agencies involving budget and/or
financial analysis, operations, and university financial policies and procedures.
*Internal or external audit experience especially in a university, state, or governmental setting
*CPA license or similar professional certification
