The Charles E. Via, Jr. Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) at Virginia Tech invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in Civil Infrastructure Systems (CIS) at the rank of Associate Professor, effective August 2023. Experienced and highly qualified applicants currently holding a faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor are encouraged to apply. We are seeking candidates motivated to contribute to a collegial, interdisciplinary community with a strong tradition of both fundamental and applied research.
The CEE Department has 48 tenured/tenure-track faculty, with an additional 7 professors of practice. Five faculty are recent early investigator recipients, and numerous other faculty are recognized nationally and internationally. The department is home to approximately 700 undergraduate students and 350 full-time graduate students. The CEE undergraduate program is currently ranked 11th, and the civil and environmental engineering graduate programs are each ranked 7th by U.S. News & World Report (USN&WR). The CEE Department is endowed through the Via Foundation and home to two endowed program areas associated with CIS: the Vecellio Construction Engineering and Management and the Bowman Sustainable Land Development Programs.

Candidates are expected to lead innovative scholarship and research, develop and sustain an externally-funded research program, teach and mentor undergraduate and graduate students, and serve the university and the profession. The successful candidate will have a Ph.D. in civil engineering or a closely related field, a strong record of academic accomplishments and a proven ability to work collaboratively, a commitment to interdisciplinary research and instruction and a willingness to expand disciplinary boundaries to address complex technical and societal challenges. Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) is preferred but not required. We seek applicants able to work collaboratively across the department to conduct cross-cutting research that addresses the complex sustainability and resilience challenges associated with civil infrastructure systems. We are particularly interested in applicants whose research takes a human-centered approach and investigates the interactions between humans, infrastructure, and the environment. Research of the design, planning, and delivery of new sustainable civil infrastructure systems or the adaptation, maintenance, and resilience of existing infrastructure services to changing social, political, and environmental conditions such as climate change is especially relevant. Successful applicants will demonstrate how their research is transdisciplinary by integrating engineering with theories from behavioral, management, social and/or life sciences to uncover creative and long-term improvement of infrastructure systems.
Applicants must hold a doctoral degree in civil engineering or a closely related field.
Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) is preferred but not required.
