Job Description

VIRGINIA POLYTECHNIC INSTITUTE AND STATE UNIVERSITY, Blacksburg, VA. Tenure track Assistant or tenured Associate Professor in the Department of Science, Technology, and Society with an emphasis in engineering studies, critical participation, and/or global technology cultures. The successful candidate must have a demonstrable background and research agenda in Science and Technology Studies or a closely affiliated field. We especially encourage applicants who can fill some of these departmental needs: engineering studies leadership, “making and doing” or engaged STS, ethnography, international or comparative work, colonialism and development, and/or relationships with engineering education or engineering and technology programs. The candidate is expected to bring or build a national or international scholarly profile. The candidate will be expected to teach our undergraduate “Engineering Cultures” class, as well as other undergraduate and graduate courses (four total per year), advise Ph.D. and M.S. students in Blacksburg and remotely to graduate students in our National Capital Region campus, and fulfill service responsibilities. We prefer someone with an established scholarly record and some experience with teaching and mentoring graduate or advanced undergraduate students. The department is interested in candidates who have a demonstrated commitment to building an equitable and diverse scholarly environment through teaching, research, and service. Ph.D. in STS or related field completed by August 2022. Salary commensurate with experience. Required Qualifications

• Ph.D. in Science and Technology Studies or related field
• Specialization in engineering studies, critical participation, and/or global technology cultures
• Evidence of research excellence
• Evidence of teaching effectiveness
• Ability to teach undergraduate and graduate STS courses (including Engineering Cultures)
• Ability to advise Ph.D. and M.S. students locally in Blacksburg and remotely to National Capital
Region campus
• Ability to fulfill service responsibilities

Preferred Qualifications

• National or international scholarly record
• Experience teaching and mentoring graduate or advanced undergraduate students
• Demonstrated commitment to building an equitable and diverse scholarly environment through teaching, research, and service.
