Job Description

GlycoMIP is a National Science Foundation Materials Innovation Platform (MIP) that operates a national user facility, conducts research, and offers education and outreach programs designed to advance the science of glycomaterials and train the next generation of glycomaterials scientists. The GlycoMIP user program operates facilities at Virginia Tech (VT) and the University of Georgia (UGA), offering glycan synthesis, characterization and modeling services to users throughout the world.

The GlycoMIP Research Scientist will (1) act as a primary contact for facility users from academia and the private-sector, (2) conduct and oversee lab work required to complete user projects, (3) work with GlycoMIP team members to develop scientific content for education and outreach activities, and (4) actively engage in growing the GlycoMIP community with a focus on increasing diversity and inclusion, and training next-generation glycomaterial scientists.

The Research Scientist will report to GlycoMIP’s Director of User Program and will work with leadership team members and scientists at VT and UGA. Exceptional communication skills with both experts and non-experts are required, as is the ability to plan, develop and implement scientific projects and effective outreach materials. A motivated team-player, the Research Scientist will successfully work with internal participants as well as external clients in support of GlycoMIP’s user program, education and outreach, and diversity and inclusion goals. Occasional travel will be required.

Required Qualifications

• Ph.D. in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Materials Science or related field
• Experience with glycoscience, including synthesis and characterization
• Proven experience managing scientific projects, including laboratory work
• Excellent communication, organization and interpersonal skills
• Ability to develop relatable scientific content for the MIP’s social media, and education and outreach presence
• Ability to work independently as well as part of a team
• Willingness and ability to travel (approximately 5% - 10%)

Preferred Qualifications

• Supervisory experience in a laboratory setting
• Experience effectively communicating scientific content to the research community, including publication in scientific journals
