The Graduate Advisor and Program Manager will oversee and manage the daily operations of the Biomedical and Veterinary Sciences (BMVS) graduate program at the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine (VMCVM) in collaboration with the Virginia Tech Graduate School. This position plays a critical role in both the strategic and operational success of the BMVS program, providing comprehensive support to faculty and graduate students. As an Administrative and Professional (A/P) faculty member on the academic administration track, the position will not only focus on administrative tasks but also on leadership and program development.
The Graduate Advisor and Program Manager will supervise program support staff and student workers, ensuring the smooth execution of daily operations and delegating tasks as necessary. They will also oversee the management of the program’s financial resources, including budget planning, assistantship allocations, and expenditures. The position requires involvement in long-term program planning, recruitment strategy development, and the enhancement of student and faculty support services. The successful candidate will be expected to exhibit leadership in implementing recruitment initiatives, advising students, and managing events that promote the growth and success of the program.
This leadership position requires strong organizational, management, and interpersonal skills to foster a supportive and efficient program environment. Regular collaboration with university leadership and external stakeholders is essential. Some evening and weekend work may be required to accommodate program activities.
• Bachelor's degree in a relevant field.
• Experience providing administrative support or program coordination in a higher education setting.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact effectively with a diverse group of students, faculty, and staff.
• Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks, prioritize workload, and meet deadlines.
• Strong organizational skills with attention to detail.
• Experience with database management and proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, etc.).
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team.
• Master's degree in education administration, higher education, or a related field.
• Experience working with graduate students and faculty in a graduate program.
• Knowledge of Virginia Tech's academic policies and procedures, especially related to graduate education.
• Familiarity with graduate admissions processes, recruitment efforts, and event planning.
• Experience with university systems such as Banner, Slate, and Canvas.
• Demonstrated experience in financial management, including budget oversight and managing graduate assistantship payroll processes.
• Experience with supervisory duties.
