Job Description

We are seeking a postdoctoral research associate to join the Coastal Hazards Lab in the Virginia Tech Department of Geosciences. The postdoctoral researcher will employ both field and laboratory-based methods to investigate the long-term frequency and magnitude of historic and prehistoric earthquakes and tsunamis at the Cascadia, Alaska, and Chile subduction zones. The data gathered will help define present-day coastal hazards and be incorporated into hazards assessments, such as tsunami inundation maps, that help prepare coastal communities for future catastrophic events.

The postdoctoral researcher will have the opportunity to develop their own research project and receive training on grant proposal and manuscript writing. The postdoctoral researcher will also have the opportunity to co-mentor graduate and/or undergraduate students at Virginia Tech. Postdoctoral research support is available for at least one year. The postdoc will have access to professional development and formal training opportunities at Virginia Tech, including preparation for going on the job market.

Required Qualifications

The postdocā€™s PhD must be conferred prior to the date of appointment and conferred within the previous 5 years. PhD degree must be in a STEM field. The postdoctoral researcher has the option to either work in person in Blacksburg or remotely. The postdoctoral researcher will interact with other members of the Coastal Hazards group through regular group meetings either in person or over Zoom.

Preferred Qualifications

The postdoctoral researcher should have experience in paleoseismic field and laboratory methods. Expertise in diatom paleoecology is required for the position. The postdoctoral researcher will be expected to assist on a variety of research projects including assisting in fieldwork.
